Gregorian.

А началось всё с картины, которую я продала в Англии в 2009 году:

Благодарю Вас за внимание!

До скорых встреч.

My story about Astoria

Hello my dear friends! How rarely I share my news here, on the dusty pages of my old London friend meaning my dear and beloved blog. Even though I changed my occupation, visited new places, met new people, and so on and so forth. However today I want to talk about something different, more precisely about an incredibly happy event that happened recently.

I’ll start with a background (not from the birth of Christ, as I love to do it, but still…) I have a friend Lena, whom we have been friends for about 12 years with and a few years ago she introduced me to her (at that time) student Pavel. Pasha (short name for Pavel) sent me some information about Astoria hotel on the 29th of July, 2020. The hotel was announcing a competition for a suitcase label that will be handed over to hotel guests and printed in the catalog. The label should have reflected the spirit of the journey, the history of the hotel, traditions, and much more.

Astoria Hotel. The photo was taken from the internet.

Most importantly Pasha wrote me a message saying:

The meaning of it was: “Go ahead, my talented friend! Everything has come together: travels and love for it, art”

I must say, Pasha knows how to motivate. His words about everything coming together gave me a lot of encouragement! I really thought that the contest was made for me (as I consider myself as an artist-traveler). But, for some reason, I “put off until tomorrow what could be done today”. In other words, my friend sent me the competition information at the end of July, the deadline was at the end of September, and I only sat down to start with the sketches on September 16th or so. I was glad that I had quite a few ideas, that Astoria inspired me, and when I read a little about the history of the hotel, studied its official website, it became even more interesting for me to draw.

Then, at some point, it seemed to me that everything was lost, I wasn’t sure that it was a good idea to participate it. Sometimes it happened that way. Sometimes there is only one step from hatred to love, and there is only one step from genius and self-confidence to disappointment.

In the end, I did a few sketches. By the way, here I would also like to thank my good friend Mila Berillo (fashion designer), because she gave me a couple of good (albeit subjective, but important) advice after seeing my works and, in my opinion it helped me a lot. In fact she gave me a very good advice about the work that was chosen by the jury so Milla, thank you so much!

Here are some of the sketches drawn with a pencil (after I made some of them in CorelDraw and here I would like to thank my musical-pedagogical college in Omsk where I studied design and I remember how to use some designer programs even after 11 years of my graduation)

And that time, the work had been sent. Standby mode was on. But at the same time I did not wait for the announcement of the results day and night. I was running around in the bustle of my beautiful days and did not even notice how the end of November came. It was at that time that I received an email from (already my fairy, my namesake) Natalia Yermashova, who said that my work was among the three winners!!! (and by the way there were a few hundreds of participants!)

There were no limits for my happiness. I felt on top of the world. On that day I was still at home, feeling under the weather but my mood changed incredibly right after reading that very important email to me! I immediately remembered about the chain that life had built for me: my friend Lena (from Omsk) – Pasha – Astoria – my participation – victory. A wonderful chain involving my dear friends in it was happiness! I would like to share some more interesting moments of my joy and interesting conclusions on this matter.

1. It was in 2014, when Crimea became a part of Russia and we had a very difficult time, terrible relations with America, that same year I won (more precisely, received the audience award (the highly voted winner) and therefore I took the second position out of several hundred design works from all over the world !!!) in the American competition (provided by Kiesza (singer))! It happened at such a difficult time for Russia. There were those who dissuaded me, because what chance could a Russian girl have in an American competition (also in 2014). But there is always time for miracles!

Here is the link for the contest and its results: https://www.talenthouse.com/i/sozdai-web-art-dlya-kiesza/submissions

2. It is 2020 nowadays. It’s a very hard and strange year for everyone, for touristic field, the hotel business in particular. And here I was again marked by the jury of the competition!

3. Astoria. It happened that I was temporarily in Omsk and was trying to move to Europe 5 years ago (I don’t remember how many times I tried to do this, haha. In general, at some point I decided that while Europe was not available to me, I applied for a job position at the beautiful Astoria hotel in the city on the Neva. And thinking that I could get an interview on Skype, I was really disappointed (their HR said to me: “Natalia, do you understand which hotel you are talking about? This is the Astoria hotel! We do not make any interviews online. If you want to work with us, you need to fly in and personally attend the interview.” Which is what I actually did. I flew to Saint Petersburg, went through two stages of selection, it was a very interesting experience, exciting and memorable. As a result, I did not go to the third stage, and I had less chances there than in the first two. At least it seemed to me. But, in fact, it was the Astoria hotel that motivated me to fly to the beautiful city of St. Petersburg, and now, 5 years later, this hotel plays an important role in my life again. Thank you, my Beautiful Astoria for such an active participation in my life!

4. Preparing for the competition and studying the hotel and its charms, I realized that I really wanted to have breakfast there. It seemed like there was no reason for me to stay in it, but coming for breakfast was something I really wanted to do!

Отель «Астория» в период самоизоляции запустил предложение на уикенд (и на любой день недели!)

And now, thanks to the Universe that always listens to my (and everyone else) desires, I won a certificate for a weekend in the hotel. It’s for two persons with breakfast included. I couldn’t believe my eyes! Dreams coming true (some of them for sure). But then I almost immediately realized that I would be much happier if my parents use this certificate when they plan to visit northern Venice. And I will be so happy to settle them in Astoria. But, since the desire to have breakfast at the hotel didn’t disappear I am still planning to go there for breakfast with a friend of mine, no matter how much it costs. I just want to do it. And it means that it will be so.

So, the first thing that I got from the wonderful St. Petersburg hotel was a magical dinner and a solemn reward taking place in the zoom. Dinner was also important because Marius Ackermann prepared it for us (the chef of the following hotels: Astoria and Angleterre).

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-2.png
The photo was taken from the internet.

For 20 years in the profession, he managed to work in the best restaurants in Germany, Great Britain, Austria, Switzerland, including restaurants with Michelin stars. Marius had a chance to cook for Barack Obama, Melania Trump, King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz and many others. In general, no matter how crazy and posh it may sound, I felt that at least at this point I stand alongside the above-mentioned people. It’s funny, don’t you think so?

I don’t know why it happened but my special dinner was supposed to be delivered to my home, but was actually delivered to the city center, to a cafe during my meeting with a friend.

Then I went with this huge box to the dentist, and then I got home… it was really nice and touching seeing the labels of the three winners placed on the box, including mine. These are indescribable feelings, a huge range of emotions and definitely very happy ones.

So, the ceremony was held in the zoom. One of the winners was in the sky (the girl was flying on an airplane) and was unable to attend, so there were two of us (the winners) as well as representatives of Astoria (including the CEO – Gerold Held, on the photo below)

and members of the jury (from the owner of the gallery to the editor-in-chief of GQ magazine). The conference took place in the format of the jury’s communication with each other, discussion of the quarantine and the current situation, travel, presentation of some products that we had in the dinner box, presentation of the contest labels (three winners and the winners themselves) and, of course, dinner itself.

My friend Nika helped me a lot. I can actually say that it was Nika who worked in a tandem with Marius and she was bringing all the dishes to their logical conclusion at home. I also touched some dishes with my creative hand but since I followed the conference attentively and was there, inside, I left my friend Nika alone and didn’t help her much. I knew she could be trusted and the dinner was excellent. Thanks again to Astoria and, of course, the jury for their choice! The event was over and the joy is still with me.

Another great present from the hotel

Well, the cherry on top (at least for me it was the main prize) was distribution, delivery of labels to the hotel visitors, printing them (the labels) in a catalog, an exhibition in the hotel lobby, and also mentioning in the media. At the moment I can share with you this link: https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/4582545 (it’s in Russian but you can see my and other’s works there)

And here is the Instagram post from the hotel: https://www.instagram.com/p/CIQnHNEjzbt/?hl=ru

In general it was such a great contest for me and I would like to sum up by the following: even in difficult times (such as Covid 2019), miracles happen! The main thing is to believe in it and wait! The second point is that the Universe will lead you where you need to be, at the right time and at the right moment, and all meetings are not accidental (thanks again to a friend who introduced me to her student and him for the link to the competition). And there is another very important point I would like to mention. I have heard many times that contests are won because of connections, and someone may even pay. Thus I would like to say that I didn’t know anyone from the jury, I had nothing to do with the hotel, I participated, jumping on the last train, and this is the result! I just believe in miracles. And I wish you to do the same and here I’ll make a stop and will continue telling you how beautiful life is! (But next time)

Thank you for your time and for being with me.

My best wishes to everyone!

P.S. Here is my work that was selected by the jury, by the way:

Magical land of fjords called Norway

And here I am again, hurray, hurray! My dear friends, I am here because it’s a very special subject (country) I would like to tell you about. And the name for the country is NORWAY!

A long time ago, more precisely in 2008 (I think so), I often listened to the Brothers Grim (Russian musical band) song “What kind of country is Norway,” and after that I dreamed about seeing “fjords made from foam, rivers made from crystal” (as sung in the song). It is very strange that I constantly traveled and visited many countries, but still hadn’t reached the cherished one.

I was flying there from Helsinki (the city that I am not so much in love with, although I tried very hard), through Oslo to Bergen, on the wings of love, as always. I really liked the fact that I managed to see 2 original works painted by Edward Munk in Oslo airport. I can not say that I liked them, although I found some interesting moments for myself. It was more valuable to me that you could get a bit of culture experience even at the airport. It’s just perfect! Don’t you think so?

However, no matter how much I liked Oslo from the first sight, I experienced the most wonderful feeling of happiness when I arrived in Bergen. Maybe it happened because I saw mountains as soon as I got off , and, as they say, only mountains can be better than mountains! There was a big smile on my face. I thought of happiness spreading inside me, and left the airport with such feeling. There were a few ways of reaching the city of Bergen: by taxi, on a special bus operating between the city and the airport and by underground (well, actually it was more like a train).

I chose the third and cheapest option – the local subway, which was very nice indeed. It was clean inside, the train was going through the city, where one could look around and get positive feelings. It reminded me my first trip to England: everything was clean, cozy, beautiful houses and good asphalt, roads (it’s always noticeable for someone who came from Russia)). I thought that I wanted to live in Bergen already on my way to the city,  and the subsequent hours spent in the city only increased this insane desire.

78

5

This is how the subway ticket from the airport to the center looks like.

6

In order to get to the city center you need to take the train to Byparken.

9

I checked into the hotel and went to see everything what I could for 1 day in Bergen. Also it was very nice to receive an envelope from Visit Bergen, specially sent to me with my name on it (with brochures, a card, discounts). There was a card for a Guest of Honor. No words can describe how much thankful I was for such a gift.

7

4

Thus, I managed to visit 3 hotels, looked at hotel rooms of different categories, talked with the general manager of one of them, visited the aquarium, magic ice bar, “flew” on the funicular, walked around the city, while visiting the main attractions of Bergen, had a little snack on the pier, went to one of the best restaurants in the city and so on. It was a very busy and productive day, as my whole life, actually.

I must admit that the pricses in Bergen (and whole Norway) are not cheap at all, and if they are also transfered into Russian rubles, it is better not to know mathematics at all or not to go to Norway. Everything is very expensive and I am very grateful to a very lovely and sweet girl Maira who provided me with a special guest card, from which almost all the sights of Bergen were free for me, and also the card gave a big discount to restaurants (that I mentioned above).

As about Bergen Aquarium I want to say that I liked it. But the Oceanarium in Dubai made a greater impression on me. I suppose it could also happen because I had much more time there and was not running around while trying to get an idea of everything in a very short period of time. I would like to show you some of the photos taken in Bergen’s aquarium:

15

Beautiful Bergen on the way to the Oceanarium

17

Entrance to the Oceanarium, where you will meet a white polar bear

19

At the entrance to the Oceanarium, you’ll be greeted by a local store with souvenirs and gifts and right after you’ll see the penguins. They were so beautiful and not very active, that I decided they were not real. But I  was wrong.

21

There was a lecture about reptiles at the time I came to the Aquarium, but I don’t really like them, or if being honest I really dislike them so I didn’t listen to the lecture, I continue my running around.

22

Marine Art object, installation of different materials

24

26

And this one reminded me of the queue to Disneyland (even though I’ve never been to one but know how it looks like)

25

Decorations: firstly I found this skull, and then there was also an aquarium with a “sunken ship”, a chain and coins. I found it quite interesting and kind of creative.

Magic Ice Bar

11

Even if it’s hard to believe I went to this bar for the work purpose. (Asked them for prices, groups, terms of sales, and so on), and also experienced being in the bar for myself. Since I have something to compare with, I just want to say that for such attraction it’s much better to visit Lainio which is a snow-ice palace located about 40km from Levi. It is huge, it is much more interesting and completely different impressions. Although, I must admit that it is wrong from my side to compare the bar and the palace.

Before entering the ice bar, you will be given a ticket for a welcoming drink (included in the entrance ticket price and this is either an alcoholic drink based on white wine and berries, or non-alcoholic like soda or juice). They will also tell you a little about the bar, give you a warm poncho (I would call it a jacket) and gloves.

30

You can see this special ticket for the drink on the photo. I can honestly tell you that I came in with full confidence that I would take just a soft drink, because: 1. I do not like alcohol and rarely drink something I don’t get the slightest pleasure from) 2. Even being away from the office, knowing that I am travelling for work, I feel that I should not “drink at work”. But when I was told that a soft drink was just a glass of cola, juice, something I tried a thousand times I went for a traditional Norwegian drink based on white wine.

I agreed with the bartender that he would pour me just a bit, just in order to try, but since we did not sign the contract, he didnt’ stick to his words and filled the glass to the brim.

As the glass was completely made of ice, in order not to drop it and not to break it (it also slides), they put it in a normal glass and also asked me (and other visitors) to wear gloves (similar to the ones my grandmother uses at the garden). Now I understand that all this time she misused them))

36

38

I could have written that from the first sip, you find yourself in a wonderful country of magical good trolls and bloodthirsty powerful Vikings, that in the background there would be a view of the charming fjord, wine would take you away and … but I don’t like alcohol, therefore, I didn’t feel anything special but only that it would be better if I would have gone for juice))). Yes, that how boring my lifestyle is but at the same time noone would disagree that I live such a spectacular life of  travels and magics, hehe

There were carved paintings on the walls of the bar and they were actually copies of work by Edvard Munk and Gustav Klimt. I liked it! I also enjoyed the music in the bar  which was fun, energetic, good for dancing, perfectly combined with the color music presented on the paintings time from time. Although I am not really sure that it was harmonious and suitable for the ice bar. I personally thought that it had lost it peculiarity and uniqueness, but I anyway danced a bit and, therefore, was happy!

31

That famous “Scream” (Ėdvard Munk) made from the ice

33

37

You can see the poncho offered to the visitors on the photo above. I went there with my own jacket because it was warm enough for such conditions.

Priceless gift!

It happened that I needed to visit few hotels, but I only found out about it on the day of arrival. For some reason I didn’t think about it, especially since I came on Saturday and now I had to go to hotels and arrange there tours. I cannot say if the hotel’s staff was very easily agree to such events and waiting for everyone with a smile on their faces, or I was just lucky that they felt my love for people and the world and happily agreed to show me around! And if I was just given a list of rooms and keys to them in 2 previous hotels, to the contrary in the third one (the most important and best hotel) I was met by the general manager of the hotel and then his wife was so kind to show me everything that could be shown. I don’t really want to mention the hotel in my blog but I want to say that this man (the general manager) was a descendant of Edvard Grieg and, accordingly, the entire hotel was a bit of presentation with history and a biography of the great composer, and if you listen to the walls of the hotel, it sounds like they whisper music, sounds stalking troll … (please note that it was not after that very glass of wine, haha). I would not allow myself even a bit of alcohol, knowing that I was going to the hotel and presenting there the company in which I work and which I love.

Well, more to the point, as I don’t want to write information about the hotel and I suppose it might not be interesting for everyone. In the meantime, I said to the lady (Britt was her name) that my parents loved the music of Edvard Grieg and I also liked his works very much (my favorite was “Morning”) and Mrs. Grieg was touched by this statement, we had a very nice talk and then she even gave me a book about the composer’s biography. Considering that I can’t finish reading the book started in September, it’s not for sure that I’ll take up the second one, especially biography written in English, but the fact of receiving it as a present from Grieg’s relative was very pleasant for me and I’ll definitely find time to read the book (I hope before my retirement).

Being honest with you, my dear readers, I definitely could live without this book. But it’s difficult to describe how much happiness and gratitude I felt for Mrs. Grieg for such a present. Perhaps this sincere gratitude and joy bring me more miracles and happiness in life.

73

12

And this is a sculpture (I think, one of many) of Edward Grieg in Bergen.

Visit to the restaurant.

Since I could have a dinner at a restaurant with a 50% discount, I thought it would be a good experience. First of all, it would be simply nice to try something new. Secondly, if customers ask for a good restaurant, I’ll have at least an idea of what to offer. In fact it’s so good to offer and sell something that you have tried yourself.

I booked a table and came to the restaurant which was famous for its fish dishes. I couldn’t remember the name of this place in Norwegian, but in translation it meant “Unicorn”. But, it seems like my horn has not grown after visiting the place 🙂

The restaurant seemed old, with history and its own atmosphere. I was not used to eating a lot at 8:30 pm, therefore, having ordered only one dish from the main menu, I began to wait for my fantastic dinner. They immediately brought me some water (it was served for free, as I understood, especially considering the fact that Norwegian tap water is absolutely safe and tasty to drink), bread and butter. I had to wait for the dish for about 20 minutes and it took about 20 minutes to finish the plate. It was delicious: soft white fish, vegetables, mashed potatoes and pomegranate. The price for such a dish seemed very high for a Russian person. But, again, understanding the local price level, there was nothing surprising …

54

55
I want to say that I did not like the waiters at first as they seemed not so friendly. But, then I said who I was and where I was from, asked about possible cooperation and, actually, I was very pleased and satisfied with their help and answers to my questions.

56
Here (on the photo above) you can see interesting Norwegian coins with a hole right in the center.

I really liked (=loved) Bergen. Also, I was warned by my friends and the Internet about 365 rainy days a year. Bergen met me with such a beautiful weather, warming and gently hugging the sun! And it was the time when I realized that Norway had been waiting for me for a long time…Thank you Norway! You are such a beauty!

14

39

And here (above) you can see the city on Sunday morning: quiet, calm and peaceful. Although, I must say, that it was also quite on Saturday evening. I was really surprised that there was such a calm nightlife, or it just happened in my arrival.

57

And this photo was taken by me at the local fish market, which is a landmark of the city

43

I found it always surprising seeing McDonalds located in a beautiful building (see the photo above). But then I saw the local Starbucks (see the photo down):

44

In order to see the whole city of Bergen you can use one of the most famous sights in Norway and the only one of its kind in Scandinavia. I am talking about the funicular Fleybanen to the mountain Fleyen. The tour starts in the heart of Bergen which is about 150 meters from the fish market.

50

This is what the road for the funicular looks inside.

51

And this is the funicular itself. In fact, I was planning to go on this trip around 5-6pm so I could observe Bergen in the daytime, the sunset and the evening city, but there were a lot of other things that took my time and I did not have time to get there at 5pm. Therefore, I managed to see the evening city only. But I was very glad about that too!

52

53

And this is a souvenir shop on the mountain. In my opinion, it was also very beautiful.

62

Morning city covered with the fog.

63

60

The city is so wonderful that it may even give the impression that I can take pictures in a good way 🙂 And here is Bergen with my eyes and my phone’s camera:

68

69

The next day I went to Myrkdalen.

Actually my purpose of the trip to Norway was a Fam trip with a very intense program: visiting and inspecting several hotels, a fjord cruise, a Viking village, some fun and activities on a snowy mountain, a boat ride on a fjord, a hike up the hill, plenty of food, delicious food (even more delicious, than you could possible imagine), a lot of meetings, people, information, and so on.

Of course, I’m not going to write here about all the information gained during the trip so I’ll just highlight some points that I want to share with you, my dear readers.

To begin with, there was something that had penetrated deep into the soul and remained there forever, probably. On the first day of the program, we had such an event as “snow activities”. As it turned out, it was a sleigh ride. You may ask yourself “what is special about it?” but you’ll understand it very soon.

It was 6 or 7h in the evening, it was getting dark and even darker, we were told to dress warmer and here we were… We were standing and listening to the instruction. Each of us was given a sleigh, helmet, flashlight on the head. After we went straight to the lift…

177

(Photo taken by professional photographer Sverre Hjornevik – https://www.sverrehjornevik.com/ you can find there absolutely amazing photos of Norway)

Having climbed the mountain, we were all together photographed by a professional, very nice, cheerful photographer Sverre and one of the main coordinators said to us:  “All right, you can go. Have fun, take your time, but remember that we will see who will come first and who will be the last ”(and all the time the organizers made fun of it, that this was an unspoken competition).

176

Sverre Hjornevik (c)

I realized at the very beginning that it was not my cup of tea as I was scared, had a lot of adrenaline and so on. Almost all the time during this “fun” I braked (stopped) with my foot, sometimes with my hand and the whole body, I turned over with the sledge and thought that the main thing for me was not to break my limbs. Moreover, it was the first day of the program! What a great start 🙂

I watched others going down, some kept quite professionally while others were just like me. And of course it was not getting any lighter but the other way around. During one of our stops, we were asked to turn off the light of our lanterns, we all looked up to admire  the starry and beautiful sky of Norway, a wonderful moment of such a scaring (at least for me) excursion.

There was a very strong sharp slope (not 90 degrees, of course, but very sharp) on our way back. I understood that I could not survive after this, and I was not the only one who got scared. Thus, I agreed with one girl that we would somehow run away from the hill, and would dragg the sleigh alone. At that time, it seemed that it would be much easier to run than to sleigh. However, after seeing that everyone, absolutely everyone was moving out of it, I felt shy to resist such an experience, especially since I was the only representative from my company and therefore I felt some kind of responsibility and a need to be brave.

Well, anyway I sat on the sled, put my feet on the brake, trying to prevent a quick descent from the mountain in advance, I wanted to slow down. And so, it started… Fortunately, I do not swear, otherwise Norway would know all about my emotions at that moment)) I rushed with the speed of the wind (the brake wasn’t helping that much), it was wildly scary and I really talked to myself!! I didn’t even talk, but screamed in Russian and English, “Natasha, come on! Everything will be fine. You’ll see. Do not be afraid! You can do it! You caaaaaaaaaaaan, aaaaaaaaah!”))) To be honest, I do not remember when I was so scared the last time, I really thought that I would not get out of this “entertainment” alive. In the end, I saw that someone was stuck in front of me or ran into another sled. So, I couldn’t turn at such high speed and was afraid that the sleigh would bring me in the girl that was stucked. Thus, I began to brake with my legs, arms, body and stopped right in front of someone else’s sledges, but there was snow melting and there was a huge puddle and I was kicked right in the puddle..there was a lot of water in my boots, plenty of water, it would be enough for watering the botanical garden))) Afterwards I couldn’t wait till the fun end and I wanted to go home, take off my boots and feel that life goes on. Haha

And in fact there were 2 people from our team receiving minor injuries. So, as you can understand now it was an unforgettable start of the program. I got off with pain in my arms and legs, a small bruise and ice on my boots and pants (I slowed down with my legs). And I will probably need to throw my boots after this.

Whatever happened there I am still very grateful to life and our people in charge for such an evening. First of all, I understood for sure that extreme sport was not my cup of tea, alas. If I can not cope with the sled, then I should not probably even think of skiing and snowboarding. Secondly, I began to appreciate life even more))

Hotels and food.

Of all the hotels that I had a chance to visit Fretheim Hotel (in Flam) was my favourite one. This hotel consists of the historic part of the building, where all the rooms are in the style of “like a grandmother’s house”, with old furniture, with a bathtub on the “legs of the beast”, with small things in the form of a casket, vases from past times. I really liked my room and that I got exactly the one in the historic part of the hotel. Because there were also new American style rooms. But I have already stayed in such rooms  in different hotels and countries. I mean those American style rooms are not quite special or at least I didn’t think so.

This is my room as well as the view from it. You can simply click on the photo and it should open in a larger version I believe. It was also very pleasant to find a postcard from the hotel staff (or from the director). How nice of them!

90

Also, I really liked the location of the hotel  which was among the mountains, close to the fjords and nature. You seem to be in another world: quiet and peaceful. If it were not for the working theme of the trip where I had an active and busy program from morning to night, I would be happy to sit outside, admire nature and “go inside myself”, but, alas, there was no time for that at all. Maybe someday I’ll go there as a tourist, although I don’t like to visit one place twice.

As for food, we had 3 meals (and once there were even 4 meals) a day on this trip. We definitely did not have enough time to get hungry, and the food was of the best quality and taste whenever we ate there! But my favourite meals were at Fretheim Hotel. Believe me, I have something to compare with: my grandmother is a professional cook, my brother cooks amazingly, in England I lived for a while in a Turkish family who had their own Italian restaurant, then I lived in a Russian-English family in London (food was very tasty there too), then I worked in Italy for 3 summers in a row, in the most beautiful resorts with super-cooks and these delights of Italian cuisine… it seems that my whole life is a big food party! But what the chef made in the above-described hotel was real fantastic! He was a chef specially invited from Bergen, who has been delighting visitors of the hotel with his masterpieces for 2 years now. To my great regret, I do not know the hero’s name, alas, alas … but I know his face which will not forget for sure. What’s more he had an interesting hobby which was visiting Michelin restaurants around the world and getting some inspiration for his own work. In addition to that, I found him being such a PR person. It was obvious that the man absolutely loved his job. And his every dish was not just heavenly bliss to taste, but it was also served beautifully, with an artistic point of view. I hardly remember tasting something better and tastier than it was there. I was ready to say “Yes” to this man. Apparently, my happiness lies through the stomach, haha.

92

You can see our restaurant at Fretheim Hotel on the photo above.

It was awkward to photograph food in the restaurant, even for the blog. It seemed to be stupid. But then I saw it (next photo) and all the awkwardness immediately passed:

It’s just a mix of dishes that we all had a chance to taste (or, more precisely ate them being full like for the rest of life) on the trip. But my favorites were down below:

112

That’s a real pity that the lighting wasn’t good for taking any photos and, perhaps, the dish does not look appetizing at all, but it’s just “flying to heaven”, it’s so tasty. It was a carrot, mashed potatoes, fish and vegetables. And in my opinion it was served very beautifully. But it’s impossible to describe this taste though!

146

I didn’t really like the “pillow” for dessert above, as it was made with honey and it was tasty but I don’t like honey in general. However, I finished it as everything else in the dessert was magical! It was panakota (which I love so much, alas))), and in this particular case it was also made on the basis of brown Norwegian cheese, which was my favorite! And the cook said that the raspberries had been also harvested in a special forest and frozen according to a certain technology, it seems that each berry was frozen separately. Honestly, I do not know how they achieved such a result, because the raspberries were large, fresh, as if they had just come from a bush. Awesome!

Fjord of the Future

We were also very lucky to go on the “Fjord of the future”. It was completely “green vessel” which runs entirely on electricity. 950 volts are used for charing it so it takes about 25 minutes to fully charge this huge vessel which is enough for one whole trip with the duration about 2 hours. She (the ship) is very comfortable, with a minimalist design in the tradition of Scandinavia. There are no stairs on the boat (ship), so it is very well adapted for people with disabilities (again, in the traditions of Scandinavia, in countries where people think of convenience for everyone which is simply great!)

Sverre Hjornevik (c)

In fact, his photos are much more beautiful, but I had to make it less quality so they won’t be so heavy for the blog and unfortunately they lost a bit of their beauty. Sverre, I am really sorry about it.

183

Sverre Hjornevik (c)

We had some kind of welcoming speech and the captain himself told us some facts about his vessel

Sverre Hjornevik (c)

The trip was awesome. First of all, I can admit that the ship definitely goes very quietly if talking about its sound. I would say it’s silence and harmony connected with the fjords, the local calm and majestic nature. Most of the time I spent on the deck, although we were provided free wi-fi there! Everything is designed for passangers’ comfort. You can also buy water, juice, alcohol and something to eat there.

121

Well, anyway, I went outside and just began to enjoy the magical world of the Norwegian nature which was extremely beautiful. I decided that I’d rather freeze (standing outdoors, near water) than I would sit in comfort, inside. But after 40 minutes of such a pleasure, I returned to the heat and joined others as even for a Siberian girl it was too much.

You know the song “I believe I can fly. I believe I can touch the sky…”. That was the very moment when I did not just believe, but I was completely sure that I would come up a little closer and touch the clouds … It was simply incredible.

That’s a pity though that I did not have the opportunity to dance and shoot a video on the background of such a cool wallpaper)

118

Viking countryside.

On the Fjord of the Future that I was talking above we sailed to the place called Gudvangen (Viking village).

122

123

We were met by the “village” manager who showed us a restaurant and a souvenir shop, and then transferred us into the hands of a viking wife. From her accent it was immediately clear that she was French. I love the French accent in English! Whenever I hear that I remember my lovely friend Manu that lives in Copenhagen nowadays.

126

Have a look at the viking helmet in the photo. In fact they have never been with horns. This is just an artistic image, the desire of the narrators to present the Vikings even more formidable and scaring. Well, the Viking girl told us various legends about the Vikings, a little about their character and habits. It was very interesting. So, for example, she said that she was a slave to a Viking, and then married him. She was humorous and told everything in a funny way:

“I tell my husband – you need to bring me this and that” – “Ok, dear.” “I tell my husband you need to wash the dishes” – “Ok, dear.” “My husband always answers correctly – Ok, dear” …

Then she took us to their leader’s house, the main viking (he was sitting inside and waiting for our arrival). After that, we were all invited to do archery and to throw few axes at the target. It was fun, interesting, but I felt that I didn’t show very good results in both activites. Apparently, I won’t be a good viking then, haha

I also want to mention how some people stay naive at their 30th year as they were at the age of 5 years and I am talking about myself. The thing is that I stood there, listened carefully and could not understand: were they the real vikings or just invited actors, if everything there had been done for the tourists and business. I listened to the French girl and believed almost every word she said.

Sverre Hjornevik (c)

The Viking lunch impressed me less than all the other things when compared to all the dishes we tried on this trip, but I really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant in which we were located there. Some of the dishes were served on a wooden board, we were drinking from very interesting glasses, etc.

Snowshoes and Stegastein

I had been waiting for my own snowshoes experience for a long time, because I had heard a lot about it, but I had never seen or tried it. And so, the day has arrived. We were waiting for a hike on snowshoes, but when we arrived at the departing place by car, the guides said that there was very little snow in the mountains and, in fact, there was no sense in snowshoeing. They offered to put them on for those who have never used this human invention before. There were 5-6 people, who preferred to go in normal shoes and I was among those. Nevertheless, I took a photo of those who used snowshoes and found out about their impressions. And I give you a small photo report.

134

It was pretty hard to go uphill in this hike, also because the soil was very different: it was grass and ground, then snow, in which you fall through. And I was also worried that I would slip and fall into the grass with the ground (in some places it was rather dirty) and I had an expensive light-colour down jacket, completely new. I found these thoughts such ridiculuos considering that they were inside someone’s head who follows the law of attraction. I walked and thought how I would fall and how would I then have to clean the jacket … well done, Natasha! It is good that not all of my “desires” and requests to the Universe are realized immediately. This is good, I think.

After the “snowshoes” trek, we had a little stop with an amazing view of the fjord, somewhere in the mountains, with the local Norwegian Kit-Kat (this chocolate called differently but tastes very similar), with cookies and hot juice. It was delicious, beautiful and peacefully.

135

131

136

And then we went down straight to the official tourist-favorite view from Stegastain view-point. To our surprise there were bottles of water  and rolls with salmon/ vegetables for everyone. It was so kind and nice from the organizing team side. Everything was done in the way that we could not get hungry even if we tried our best, haha. It’s just impossible 🙂

138

139

Also we were really lucky that almost no one was on that place but our group. There are usually a lot of people in the season during the summer and therefore it is almost impossible to take a photo without strangers on your background.

140

BEER

One day we also had an excursion to a local brewery, a small but unique one. You will probably be surprise but I was not waiting for this tour at all, to be honest I absolutely didn’t want it and it’s simply beause I don’t like alcohol, and especially beer. Many friends told me that they would love to go there instead of me. Where were you at that moment, my friends ????)))

If talking briefly, they gave us each a try for small snacks of 3 types. It was something like tomato soup in a glass, baked shrimp with something, then reindeer meat with something, and, finally, a piece of chocolate cake with something (oh, this “something” I know how to make presentation, haha). There was a little bit of everything, literally a spoon, but, as always, very tasty, elegant and artistic, which was not uncommon in those places.

104

105

106

Then we were told about how beer was made. Honestly, since I was not in the subject, I did not quite understand the technique and did not understand all the words (the story was in English). Usually, I have no difficulty understanding anything in the language of Shakespeare, but, apparently, not about beer.

108

After that fascinating story of beer history we were each given a wooden plate with 5 glasses and there was beer of a different sort. The brewery worker talked to us about the variety, we tasted it and tried to guess what was used in this or that particular type of beer. Then he told us what was there in fact. Most of my colleagues were shining with such happy faces during the tasting while I was struggling inside myself: “Natasha, please, here’s a glass of beer with a flower or something else with citrus notes. And this one with chocolate and coffee! Don’t you like it? So, try again… what kind of person are you!?”And I decided to try it for the second time. I tried my best to love at least one beer, but it was beyond my strength. I do not understand how people can love this sort of alcohol, maybe one day I will…anyway, I was glad to have such an interesting experience, new knowledge and emotions. And of course as always I really appreciated everything we were given, told and had.

109

RIB boat and Brown Cheese

We also had a rib boat ride. At first we were dressed like minions, big weighty minions (see the photo below) and along the way, the guide told us different interesting stories about fjords, legends of these places and so on.

99

101

How could I describe the trip. Well: Beautiful views, the wind in the face, desire to take a photo (but the phone is somewhere far inside, under the minion’s suit and life jacket)…

194

Sverre Hjornevik (c)

195

Sverre Hjornevik (c)

When we arrived at Undredal (small village in the municipality of Aurland in Sogn og Fjordane country) we were taken to a house-shop to try Norwegian goat cheese. Alas, I had to go to the ladies’ room like 5 others did and while we were standing in a line, almost all the cheese was eaten by another part of our friendly, hungry expedition))). And they were also told about cheese and its production.

192

Sverre Hjornevik (c)

It was very sad that I missed everything, but still happy that I got a sample of the famous brown cheese! In my opinion it was such magic! The taste was so unusual. People say that this cheese is either hated or loved. Thus I took the second option. It is a pity that I could not buy it and bring it to Russia. Hope I’ll do it next time.

The Flåm Railway

On the last day of our wonderful Fam Trip we went on the world-famous Flåm Railway (Flamsbana). It was very beautiful indeed but unfortunately the view was quite grayish. I think that this path is much more fascinating in summer. However there are a lot of tourists in the season and this time we had own private car which was superb.

People

I could tell you only about our transportation, about inspections in different hotels, though it it’s not a report but a blog of an emotional and sensetive person as I am. Thus I would really like to tell you all about how much I am gratefull for meeting wonderful people, again and again 🙂

It all started with our arrival to Myrkdalen and right after that we had a small presentation before sledding. We sat at the tables put in the rectangle shape and in fact, everyone could see each other. We were asked to introduce ourselves, the company we were from and tell two words about our work. I must admit I usually get very nervous and not only before serious performances, but even before the minute presentation of myself, I have a “drought” in my throat, I begin to groan and have some other symptoms of an insecure and not confident person. Yes, I happen to be this way… but at the same time, hearing how others quietly speak about themselves and the company they come from, I understand that the point of the presentation is to introduce yourself and the company, and not to mumble something under your breath and therefore I put myself together when I hear “Your turn”, breath in the air and loudly and clearly say that I usually introduce myself as “Natasha From Russia” and everyone remembers my name and hopefully they do remember Easy Travel being my work and home, haha), and then I say a few words about our work. As a result, several people came up to me after and said that my name was remembered out of all others, and some, fortunately, also remembered the name of my company, which was also very nice.

What I really wanted and dreamed about was to meet some representatives of France and Italy at this event in order to practice those languages I love. Fortunately, I met them (there were two colleagues from France and one from Italy), but, alas, because of my belief that it is impolite to speak a language that someone does not understand, I almost  did not use this opportunity and managed to speak Italian properly only once and, literally, 5 minutes for the entire trip in French. So, I am now making a request/wish to the Universe: I need to practice my rrrrr and other sounds of this beautiful language for a little while. Please do send me more French people on my way as it’s getting worse than my Italian.

In any case, I really liked our team,  some people I got to know quite closely, while with others I almost didn’t communicate at all, and I don’t even know the names of those people. It was a very funny moment with the Greek girl Ani from Copenhagen. We both had some trouble with the sledding. I think she was also not very enthusiastic about this and two of us dragged her sleigh to the finish when our incredible adventure was comming to an end. And it accidentally happened that we always sat side by side at every lunch and dinner. And so, the people in charge decided that it was necessary to break up the “couple” and “triple” so that we all could make new friends, talk to other people and they put some cards with our names on the table. It was, by the way, fun when one of the main organizers (he’s a sales manager at the hotel) saw that it was written “Natalia Barantseva” on my card and asked me, “Why isn’t “Natasha From Russia” written here?” We all laughed about it, I said that this was an unforgivable mistake from their side, but I decided not to complain and try my best to forgive them.

110

As talking about those cards it happened that mine one was alone at the table meaning that there was noone on the opposite side. There would be sitting people next to me, but noone in front and I wasn’t shy and joked with one of the people in charge if they decided to put me in the way so I could talk to “a new person” that was myself. They laughed, also realized that they had done the wrong thing and swapped places for me and, purely by chance, put my name next to Ani and so we were together again. Later we laughed with her as she would be sitting in Copenhagen, I would be in St. Petersburg and how could we eat lunch and dinner separately from each other. After all, the fate itself placed us to eat nearby.

In general, our team was very good. In my personal opinion, everyone made a good impression in one way or another. I found some great professionals in my field, realizing that I was still far away from them and, I must say, there were many moments when I felt my own lack of knowledge in tourism, more precisely in Norway. By the way I was really shocked that a person with such good memory (as I consider myself) found it almost impossible to remember all the Norwegian names of places, natural points, etc. It honestly made me very upset.

Anyway, I am extremely happy that this trip happened in my life. Of course, I will always be grateful to Easy Travel and my wonderful boss, and the excellent managers and workers of Visit Flam. After the Fam Trip, I went to Oslo and I spent an evening and half a day in the capital before I came back home, finally … as talking about Oslo, there is also so much to share but I will post some photos instead.

155

This is the National Gallery of Oslo, where I was hoping to see the original work of Edward Munk “Scream”, but instead I saw this:

157

Closed until 2020 !!! My face expression was just like in the picture “Scream”, haha

And the capital of Norway also met me with wonderful, sunny weather! Thank you, dear Oslo!

199

My dear friends, I’ll probably finish here. Although, I would like to tell and share a lot more, but it’s impossible to find time for everything and I don’t want you to get bored with my endless text and pictures… And besides that, I also have a job, office, sport, cultural program, drawing, languages, friends who are always waiting for my messages, attention (although, many have already forgiven me for being isolated and followng my life and dreams without paying that much attention to communicating with everyone).

I really hope that after reading this you are right now checking the flights to Norway and planning to visit the beautiful, magical Flåm, Bergen and Oslo… this is a real fairy tale! And I really wish everyone to see all these places in reality, right in front of you!

With love, Natasha from Russia 🙂

Strange but inviting country

Hello, my fantastic people!

Today I’m writing about the country which economy is developing by leaps and bounds, by milliseconds))), there is a cafe with dogs, cats, raccoons, kangaroos and meerkats. Many consider this country being the center of world plastic surgery. Unfortunately people there also eat dogs (but as far as I know this fact connected with elderly rich local citizens only). You can also eat a live octopus and it’s very dangerous. I watched it in the TV show called  “Oryol and Reshka” and the presenter said that when eating a live octopus you need to chew for a very long time because the octopus is sucked by its tentacles to the palate and if you do not sufficiently chew it, it will stick to your throat and you can suffocate. That’s such a positive story I’m starting my current article with)))

So anyway I’m talking about South Korea! My acquaintance with the country began with Seoul but I spent much more time in Busan.

I don’t even know where to start. Perhaps I’ll just share with you some photos and write my comments about them.

1

Put this photo as the first one as it’s all about WELCOME to Seoul! 🙂 (and even in Russian language)

63

The underground map scared me straight away I saw it)))

Olympic Games
The first thing I had forgotten for some reason was the fact that in February 2018 were going  to be Winter Olympic Games in Seoul! Therefore I was particularly pleased to be in this country (and of course for that moment I had no idea what the situation would be with the team from Russia). Right at the airport I was greeted by the talisman of the upcoming games.

1

Korean Won
The second thing that shocked me was the local currency which was almost 20 times less than the Russian ruble, therefore,  you could feel like a millionaire after exchanging even a bit of money. Although I had about 300 000 Korean won when I changed some of the money at the airport. What’s more interesting that even with the time, after a month spending there I was still shocked when my breakfast cost me around 5000 (won) or when I bought a pair of very simple slippers for 3000 (won). Another example I can think of was the whole watermelon which cost around 15,000 that in my opinion was very expensive. In general if compare prices with the same ones in Omsk where I come from almost everything there (in Korea) was double-priced or even more.

2

Koreans and their English
Another thing that really surprised me was the ignorance of English. Well, I agree that the situation is not better in Russia but since I speak Russian I don’t know how I would feel if I was a foreigner in my motherland. It was extremely difficult to find a person who could speak English even in large expensive shopping malls in Busan. Therefore I was very glad that the purpose of my trip was to teach English to these lovely people as I really wanted to help them in this difficult task. I must also say that despite their problems with the language, most of the local residents were very friendly, always ready to help, show the way, even with the use of gestures or help of Google Translator. Anyway I really liked local people.
And I always had fun there when I saw a poster or an ad where one word was written in English and I seemed to stand and think that now I would understand everything but no … the only word in English followed by the whole text in Korean))) It was too early to be happy, hahah
And there was that discrimination. When I came across a big text in Korean in a museum that was translated with the only one phrase in English! I do understand that Shakespeare’s language is great and mighty but one phrase?))  Come on…I demand the proper translation for non Korean-speaking visitors! 😀

Apart from the stories about my teaching, interesting places that I was lucky to visit, my international team I would also like to tell you about Korean cuisine. How can I resist this subject on my blog? Then I would not be myself, haha

Teaching English in a language cafe
As you can see from the title above I didn’t teach English in an usual way. I worked 4 hours a day, from Monday to Friday. There were students of different ages, interests and beliefs that were coming to us and our boss Neo (alas it was not the same Neo from the Matrix))) was telling which teacher was with this or that student. It was almost like a Russian roulette as you never knew for sure which student you would get – it could be a sociable, energetic young man with a good level of English or maybe a listless, sleepy, lazy student who had nothing interesting in his/her life. And whoever you had as your student you had to communicate with him / her for 2 hours (in rare cases it was for an hour) while teaching the language.

It happened that I was often given new students, I spent 2 hours with them and the next day they were given to a new teacher. One of my colleagues (the one from Latvia) joked that I was like a hook. The student arrived, spent 2 hours with me and enthusiastically left the language cafe thinking about the cafe with such a cool girl from Russia (just so you now these are not my words). Thus he was ready to go to the cafe, paid for the lessons and the next day our  boss changed the teachers and again he gave me a new student))) I believe it was exaggeration and some kind of compliment from my Latvian colleague because all the teachers were really creative and good in their own way but thank you Ervins for such nice words about me 🙂 and thank you for missing me tremendously))

In general I want to say that I like this teaching method a lot because we were teaching English during our communication which couldn’t be better. In addition to that this experience helped me to understand the culture and mentality of local residents. And at times I found it difficult to maintain a conversation with a stranger for 2 hours and this difficulty I also liked because “what does not kill us makes us stronger”))). It seems to me that by teaching very different people I learnt a lot about myself and I am grateful for such an experience.

And I was also over the moon about living with my colleagues because all of them came from different countries such as Canada, America, Latvia, France, Poland, Mexico, Holland, Germany, etc. Accordingly most of my time I spent in a very international get-together, which certainly made my life looking like a fairy tale. It’s hard to describe in a couple of words how much happy I was although I’m always happy)))

You can easily notice how we are both excited on the photo during the lesson)))

A little bit about Korea

Toilets
The first thing I want to mention is the availability of toilets. Yes, they occupy one of the first places in my article, haha. The matter is that I have been to many countries and I do not remember that I saw toilets at each subway station. What’s more I am talking about free toilets! I remember a day when I was walking with a close friend in London and was about to use a public toilet for 50 pence. A friend (being a young successful man, Philip hello!))) said to me: “Natasha, you’ll pay 50 pence now, and then another 50 and another 50 next time. So one day you’ll realize that you could have bought an apartment instead of spending this money on the public toilets”)))) Thus, I can conclude that it would have been easier to buy an apartment in South Korea for me than in any other countries, hahah.

Masks
Another thing that surprised me there was the popularity of face-masks. It seemed to me strange and to be honest sometimes terrible (please forgive me if it sounded offending now). My American (although she has not yet confirmed her nationality, because people used to say she was Russian)) female-friend often wore a mask and even her husband said that it looked like underwear on her face))). However my darling Caitlin opened the whole world to me))) because I was sure that every passerby wearing a mask had some kind of illness and just did not want to infect others or get sicker. My American girl told me that this masks also protected from polluted air, people hided their skin from ultraviolet rays and thus could prevent the appearance of wrinkles. Well, I didn’t care that much… because at the age of 28 I believe I look 20))). And the polluted air did not frighten me much as I was originally from a city with an oil factory and just to mention that my inner happiness was better than any masks. In any case I did not have anything against Caitlin’s masks, I just laughed but always kindly and always with her by my side. I love this girl with the mask or without it! (See the photo below)

1

12

And this is obviously not Caitlin on the photo with me but Josh who got this mask as a present from…yes, right – Caitlin))))

Etiquette
The Koreans use a special hand shake (when showing respect): you should slightly hold your right hand  with the left hand during the shake. I noticed that the same gesture was used in all the stores when I was given a change and a bill. And one of the students told me that once Bill Gates had met with the Korean president and shook hands in the usual way as was customary in the west and it looked very disrespectful and rude from Mr. Gates. I decided to mention this story so he will read it (of course from my blog) and will not do it next time when in South Korea))).

Koreans and laziness. Myth or reality?
Alas, there were many of my students who confessed their laxity. The thing is that before the trip I saw a few programs about the country and in each broadcast it was said that the Korean people were very hardworking and purposeful. Communicating with my students, I often heard that their favorite thing to do was sleeping, that they did not particularly like to go anywhere, preferred to stay at home and do nothing, and quite often I got statements like: “Natasha, I’m just lazy”. Then I used to ask them if they were real Koreans. But on the other hand they could honestly admit what their nature was. This was a good thing I believe.

Korean language
Before traveling to Korea, I was very motivated to learn the language and take the most from our Korean lessons that the company provided us with. However after my arrival there I found out that the lessons were going to be for just an hour and only twice a week. Thus I realized that it was a drop in the ocean and of course during that time I learnt almost nothing. Hieroglyphs did not succumb to me, the pronunciation escaped me insolently, the sense of language never came across to me, haha. In fact I was very disappointed with myself because I thought that any language was like a piece of cake for me, but in this case my motivation was too weak to reach some level in Korean. In any case I do not regret that I attended quite a few lessons there, because we had a very nice teacher and we often sang Korean children’s songs with my kids, oops…I mean my colleagues))). It was fun. It’s something I can sing to my own children in the future… though I hardly remember a single word we learnt but I can study them again, specially for my kids))

Do not remember anything from these notes…what a pity 😦

10

After seeing this picture one of my Russian friends asked me if we were doing some black magic and inviting dead people come to us)))

as you can see from my cheeks I am smiling = I am happy = singing session in Korean is about to start 🙂

Oryol and Reshka. The search for treasure
I suppose many of you don’t know the program “Eagle and Tails”. According to the best source ever (Wikipedia, hahah) it “is a Ukrainian television travel series that launched in 2011. It is broadcast in the Russian language in Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan, and reruns are also available on Polish, Israeli and Transnistrian television”. We were very lucky that the filming of the show took place in Busan while we were there. I was informed about it by my Russian friends-neighbours (Katya and Ksenia). If I remember well it was Sunday evening and they told me that the release of the broadcast was posted on their official Youtube chanel only a couple of hours ago. Of course we felt a great desire to find the treasure of $100 (they hide $100 in every show wherever they go). In addition to that a bottle of money was hidden on the Haeundae beach which was 10-15 minutes walking distance from us. But it was a very windy evening with the storm warning and obviously noone really wanted to go to the beach late at night, but who would stop the Russian soul! What is more the Latvian soul joined us. And so there were four of us who went to search for the treasure.

38

We didn’t have shovels but 4 table spoons, a spoon per person (well equipped team))).  The road was fun because we always had fun being all together. When we came to the beach we started looking for a point from which we had to count 13 steps forward and 13 steps to the right. It was very funny searching for this exact point, looking at buildings, on a map…And imagine that there was some construction work going on exactly where the bottle of money was buried so everything was dug up or fenced. It’s hard to express our disappointment! But we still had fun especially when we saw the same searchers as us but with a shovel and then another one and another…”Oryol and reshka” is a popular TV-show for travelers and adventure lovers))

Russian Texas street
There was a Russian street in Busan where you could exchange currency (not rubles, a bit oddly), buy Russian products and feel as in Russia. This street was called Texas Street  (logically)) and located next to Busan railway Station. I went there a couple of times for oats. I had some funny and nice photos but could not find them…that’s a mystery of my life))

Was it dangerous to be in South Korea?
Majority of my friends and relatives were worried about how I was planning to stay in South Korea! What if there was a war started?! So, I want to say that in the autumn 2017 there was absolutely no fear, no panic (probably there is the same situation now). People live for their own pleasure and live very well I must say. The only thing that confused and surprised me was that they had glass cabinets with gas masks and something else (maybe food) at the underground stations in case North Korea attacked the South.
But at the same time have a look at the poster that was hung at the main railway station in Busan.

Bomb_NK_Mr_Trump

Me and my American friend were very shocked by this statement. Of course, I understand that the relations between the two countries were sharply negative, but still… Especially if consider the fact that they are neighbors and any threat of North Korea can be reflected and include South Korea. Anyway I was really glad to see that everyone there continued to live, enjoy life, and do their usual things. In general I would say that being in South Korea was not only a big pleasure for me but it was safe! For example there were several times when me and my friends returned home at 3-5am and we felt absolutely calm and protected, at least in Busan.

Free shower !!!
And I really liked (or rather it made my day that time) a poster in our room with this saying: “There is free shower! Let’s take a shower every day!” Finally for my 18 years (my true age)) I found a free shower. Definitely used this opportunity to wash for 20 years ahead))) I wish I could share a photo with this poster here but I believe I deleted when trying to have some more memory on the phone.

My dances
I really wanted to dance. It was required by my body and my soul. However I could not find a suitable place in our building, we were going to a few night clubs quite often (1-3 times a week), but it’s different as I could’t do crazy, dynamic dances, which I wanted and in addition there were a lot of people there, it smelled tobacco and it was stuffy. Then, one day I decided to go out, just outside the building, put on headphones and start dancing. It was like connecting with my true self or even with the cosmos. I did not care that some people reacted strangely or some man tried to speak with me or the passing cars slowed down to watch my dance. I was totally in my dance and in the music. I kind of liked doing it and then it became a usual thing to dance outside, near the road. It’s good to not be really shy but just a bit)))

Nate and his flexibility
Once we were sitting at work with the collegues in our language cafe but doing nothing. There was no work and no students for such wonderful teachers as we were. But, at the same time some of our colleagues were working and teaching this magnificent international language to the Korean population))). And suddenly it became quiet and  by chance everyone heard our dear Canadian mate – Nate and his dialogue with a student. Specifically we happened to hear a phrase he said to his student: “are you flexible?” We burst into laughing.  Only we calmed down more or less and suddenly there was another Nate’s sentence appeared in the silence: “Well, I used to be flexible when I was younger”. I must say it had been one of our favourite jokes about Nate and his flexibility for quite a while))

Tooth-brushing couple
We had a couple of teachers from Amsterdam. They were often separated from us but together all the time. However when I managed to spend a couple of minutes with them and talk, I was really glad about it as I liked them a lot. What attracted me the most was that they often brushed their teeth together in the hall (I know I found pretty weird things attractive, haha). At first it seemed strange to me but I told them that it reminded me of Groundhog day and every morning when I went out into the hall and saw them together with their toothbrushes, I smiled and I knew that the day was going to be wonderful! After sharing my thoughts with them I decided to join and cleaned my teeth joining this lovely couple in the corridor though just for a couple of times. A sort of trio tooth-brushers))), they even began to call themselves toothbrushing couple))

Guys, I really hope you don’t mind I use the photo from your Facebook! If so just let me know, I can remove it.

Prair, apples, peanut butter and memory

I could not resist of  telling you about one lovely Thai girl in our language cafe and the teachers’ house. Her name is Prair. I think she is about 30 years old. She is also very sociable and a bit loud in a good way.  So it turned out that I tried to get up early (although my work usually began at 2pm), and Prair got up even earlier and therefore we had breakfast together almost every single day. I was eating a toast or just bread with an egg, as well as a piece of bread with peanut butter, and Prair was eating spicy chicken in breadcrumbs with noodles, vegetables and apples (at 8-9am!).

By the way I need to stop here and tell you about apples and peanut butter. Apples in Korea are terribly expensive or at least for a Siberian person who came from Russia. For instance we can buy a kilo of apples for 2 euros in Russia (or even less) while 5 apples cost about 7 euros in Busan. Ok, they were large, sometimes even huge but still it was very expensive. And very often it happened that I decided to buy them, came to the supermarket or to the market but seeing the price, calculating it into rubles I thought that I could wait till I come back to Russia))). Seeing that Prair was eating my forbidden fruit I asked if she did not think it was unreasonably expensive and I was really surprised when she explained that in Thailand apples were more expensive (even more expensive? Seriously?))) And therefore she was happy to eat them in South Korea . That’s all about comparison and different perspective!

And here is the story about peanut butter. I may be wrong but as far as I remember I had never tried it (and how many countries I visited, with so many people I lived!)  Also my association of this dessert was with one of the most beloved films and actors: “Meet Joe Black “and Brad Pitt whose character eats the butter with a spoon and speaks of his pure love for this food product.

df76f5b2fc218b18d1c994bfa59d748a--claire-forlani

Many of my colleagues bought peanut butter and I was not an exception (still talking about Busan). It was a very special day for me when I finally tried it! And I must say I really liked it! What a delight to have it with a hot crispy toast where the butter melts a little… in general, I said him YES!)))

So, let’s return to our lovely Thai girl. Many of my friends think I am an angel but have they seen me in the morning? I’m not the kindest and sweetest person in the world at the time. I’m  for sure not a walking positive and sometimes it is even better not to touch me and be near me. I am talking about myself real as I can be with my family. And since I often live with other people’s families, colleagues, friends, strangers, I try to behave very friendly and people think that I always have a smile on my face. Such naive people, hahah. Though I believe that I became much better with all this traveling I have had. Anyway my story is about Prair who once in the early morning asked me about my plans. I was kind enough to tell her more or less in details when and where I was going to. The next day we also “met at breakfast” and she asked me how long I had planned to stay in Busan, where I then was going to fly. Despite the fact that I answered the very same question a day earlier I repeated. The next day it was deja vu situation again and even though she didn’t ask word for word while changing the question a bit, the context remained the same… I could not stand it any longer and told her that I had already told her about it. Then we laughed together and she apologized for such a bad memory and she told me she didn’t know most of the teachers by name and so we talked about it. I assured her that I knew everyone by her or his name and even all of my students. What was my secret? Probably I love people so much that for me remembering someone’s name is a must if I want to communicate with this person. However  it was harder in South Korea than anywhere else before. I had to remember that one student’s name was Shihan Kim, another one was Song Ming… so I had to ask my students to write their names on the board at the beginning of our meeting, then I fixed the inscription in my head (in extreme cases on the phone) and remembered their names pretty well.

10

As about my colleagues I remembered the face of the new teacher and fixed the name with the face (in my head as well) and if I needed to remember about 6 or more names a day, I could come up with an association. For instance Prair was easier to remember as there is a verb “to pray”. Another example is an absolutely amazing German guy called Simon. One of my PR-teachers in London had the same name (the image of this teacher is still being very bright in my head))), Diana (Princess Diana) and so on … I think that the only problem for me was the name of Thornton that I could neither remember the first time nor pronounce normally. And also there was a very nice and friendly American guy named Josh that I at first called George)))I just misunderstood a bit and had been calling him by another’s name for about a week. Josh, I apologize if you read this!)) The point was that my memory was pretty good and that Prair helped me a lot to learn how to calm down when the nervous system began to rage because of the morning question-time! Afterwards I just sent her a message on Facebook with the dates and points of my destination/route))))
Yes, I’m creative in terms of solving my problems))

Natasha is miss cleaner of November!
I could not miss this story about cleaning. When I had my Skype interview for this position my boss told me that I (like everyone else) would have to clean up our home once a week. No problem. But when I arrived at the place and started teaching I found out that after all only the boss himself was cleaning. I believe that one day he got tired of it and he hung several sheets with a schedule of cleaning duty. Everyone had to choose the day and time and write his/her name in the box. After a few days there were still empty columns with no names written down and then a girl from New Zealand (as I later learnt, as my sources reported to me))) wrote my name in all the columns which basically meant that I was the one cleaning from Monday to Sunday. I remember how I came home in the evening and my Mexican friend (Isabel) said to me: “Aww, Natasha, thank you!” I was surprised: “for what?!” The answer was: “Because you decided to clean every single day! How kind of you!”)))) It was very funny and even though I didn’t meet their expectations I enjoyed to be the main person in this prank.

17

The best teacher ever!
I’ll tell you another funny story about how one English teacher taught another one. Being precisely it was me and my good friend from Morocco. Chadia came and said that she had washed the bed linen and could not find it on the terrace where she left it to dry and therefore asked me: “Natasha, do you know what is it called in English?” I never liked that word because it’s sheets and shit sound pretty the same in Shakespeare’s language (and I wonder if he used the second word by the way?))) Nevertheless I shared my knowledge with Chadia. And the same day later on when I was sitting in the kitchen with my Latvian friend Ervins, Chadia came to us and said a phrase that sounded a bit like this: “I still can not find my bed shit!!” I must say me and Chadia made that day so dear friends if you have a question about English language I am for sure the right person to ask! Even if I don’t help you I can certainly make your life funnier!

With Chadia 🙂

Canadians and their Putin
Another funny story involved a very sweet couple with a great sense of humour from Canada. It was evening time when I went to the kitchen (well, not that late so you would not think I went there for eating at night, haha). They said to me: “Natasha, we’re thinking about making Putin party. What do you think about it and do you think we need to write some information on our kitchecn board? We should also find out who would be in and so on?” Of course I had a feeling that I could get them wrong while standing infront of them and imagining Russian posters being everywhere, Russian songs, a portrait of Vladimir Putin on the wall and his visit to us, in Busan))) then I decided to clarify whether my associations were true and what specifically the Canadians wanted to do. We all laughed because Putin was a traditional Canadian (Quebec) dish which was fried potatoes with cheese and some kind of special sauce. In general healthy food and all that))) and unfortunately I still have not tried the dish but I’m sure that one day I will go to Canada and try it!

32

(These Adidas lovers from Canada are superb, cool and wonderful people! Cannot wait to see them again. The guy on my left has parents who are the owners of a bakery in Canada. That’s why I said so many good words about them. Hopefuly they’ll offer me a pastry to try, hahah)

My Canadian friends of Putin organized the party a week or two later after I left Korea. However I wanted to support them so I sent them a nice message)))

And by the way they write a blog, have their own site about traveling in Asia for a few months on a budget. Have a look if interested https://www.thetrippingcouple.com/

Earthquake
One day when we were all sitting in our beloved language cafe, teaching English I suddenly felt that my chair was shaking under me. I decided that it was a joke of the teacher sitting behind me. Thus I turned around in the hope of attacking the humourist but there was noone behind. I continued the lesson but suddenly we all felt the shaking of the floor, furniture, everything. Our boss came to us and said that everything was ok and that it was an earthquake. Mickey (not Mouse, but our Mickey – a very charming girl from Japan) said: “I don’t trust this building, can I leave it please?” Natasha (as usual talking about myself) decided to defuse the situation and said rather loudly in English: “Guys it was very nice to meet you! Just in case, I want to say that I love you all!” everyone laughed, the earthquake ended, the curtain closed, applause)))
In fact I was not scared but rather it was even interesting for me because it was the first earthquake in my life (hopefully the last one) and I was glad to experience it.

My search for an Italian speaker
I really wanted to practice Italian and where else if not in South Korea. As my dad joked: “then you will go to Italy and will search for a Korean in order to practice Korean language”))
Actually I tried a lot of options: different websites such as couchsurfing, conversionexchange, facebook (I found a girl from Milan on FB and met her once, it was a great meeting that I enjoyed but I continued to search more). I asked my friends and friends of my friends, and students who worked in an Italian restaurant or a cafe. I could find no one and nowhere… And one day somehow we went to the club. It was around midnight and we accidentally noticed a Russian guy on the subway, started talking to him and I asked where his friends (there were 4 guys) were from. He told me that one of them was from Russia, one was from Holland and the fourth was from Italy…so if you search you will find it for sure! I had a big pleasure communicating in Dante’s language for about 15 minutes while being on the train! All my friends were slightly shocked because they knew how much time and efforts it took me to search for a person to practice Italian with! Which advice I can give you, my dears? … Do you want to learn languages? Underground is there to help you out!)))

Cultural village
A massive thank goes to my American friend that she took us into a cultural village. She was the one who offered to go there, learnt all the details of the route and was practically our guide. The trip was wonderful because the place was very artistic and interesting, the weather was good and most importantly the company was magical. There were all my close friends-colleagues! More precisely there were: Ervins from Latvia (who started almost every single lesson of his with an explanation of what Latvia was and where it was), Nate from Canada (that flexible guy), Chadia from Morocco (the one with lost sheet), and my dear Caitlin from America (lover of Korean drama, food, fashion and masks). I’ll just post pictures here. I hope they will give some sense of our adventure there.

Also, Caitlin organized another trip to the city called… I do not remember the name of it, it was something in Korean language))

This time we went there together, just two of us. I must say this trip was not quite easy for me because I went out the night before our mini-trip. As far as I remember I went with the guys to the beach. I was with the Canadian, the Latvian and the French guy. My three musketeers! Guys, I miss you so much! (And I wrote the same phrase in my Russian version in case you have learnt Russian and you read it there. Just so you know I miss you in English, Russian, Italian and French – all the languages I can speak!))). Anyway lets get back to the story: we returned late and they arranged a small concert of singing with the use of some helium balloons. It was mega-fun and at 5 am, sitting all together in the kitchen (we were joined by Simon and Josh so there were already 5 musketeers and just one lucky girl from Siberia)) I suddenly remembered that I promised Caitlin to wake up at 8am! I told her about my crazy lovely night in the morning and she said that I was still young because I had slept only 3 hours and looked pretty good. You can see it from the photos.
4

Talking very briefly about our trip the road both ways took us about 5 hours I think. So, alas, we managed to see only one temple but what a temple! And we certainly enjoyed our walk, delicious street food, some ice cream in McDonald’s. And most importantly we spent time together and it’s priceless! (Especially I feel it now, sitting in Russia and missing my girl and the time we had spent together).

Delicious chicken stuffed with some rice (street-food)

My very first Korean student

I’m afraid of offending someone by not writing about a person on my blog. After all, everyone or almost everyone was special to me, gave me happiness and joy but I simply cannot physically write about everyone. I hope you’ll understand it.

I want to mention that I was really worried on my first day of teaching in Busan and I had a student who also came to us for the first time and she worried no less than I did. How fortunate it was that we met that day! She was (and still is) a wonderful person, very kind and purposeful student! I even had the honor of visiting her house and getting to know her family. Thank you, dear Lydia!

44

ALWAYS CHEERFUL
There is another story I want to tell you which is about my lesson with the Korean guy called Sean (this is his English nickname). By the way I fell in love with this student (as a friend I mean), because he was such a quick-learner, was very motivated and apart from 4 hours of classes in our language cafe, he was also spending 4 hours a day learning grammar independently. And he was very open, kind and interesting. With such students you never notice how time flies, the lesson passes instantly.

43

Well, anyway, one day I decided to share my methods of studying languages with Sean and one of the methods was studying words with the cards (stickers) written with the black ink on a yellow background. I explained him that according to different studies this combination of two colors helps to memorize words better. Literally a couple of seconds later he noticed that I was wearing a black top and a yellow cardigan and we began to laugh that I was dressed in a special way so that the students could remember my lessons. Then Sean could not get together (and so did I), we all talked about me and my love for the yellow color. And the next day he gave me a yellow bracelet and said that I had been always cheerful. Now I wear this bracelet very often and at hard times I see “Always cheerful” on my hand and I am sure it’s about me! This present is very important to me as a memory and also it reminds me that I am always on the positive side and there is no other way for me! Thank you so much Sean!!! And I miss you too!

31

Food
I feel this paragraph will be the longest because we all know what the path to the man’s heart, to the woman’s emotions, to the obedience of the animals, to the madness of all the hungry is… oh, yes! The answer is the food!
Actually as often my plan was to eat rice, vegetables and noodles provided by our boss but when I arrived, I realized that unlimited noodles were Ramyeon (instant noodles)

1

there were only white type of rice and only frozen vegetables. In fact I pretty often ate this food while sometimes experimenting and mixing noodles, rice and vegetables all together. But, at the same time, I managed to try a lot of interesting and tasty dishes outside our teachers’ home. Time from time I was treated by my students or the students of my friends or some other people.

The first thing I want to mention is the love of Koreans for the red beans in desserts. I never tried the famous white dessert with red beans on its top. But I tried the pie with beans in the form of fish.
goldfish-bread-537x402

(Photo was taken from the internet)

I also tried an ice cream with a layer of beans, also in the form of fish.

Once I bought a couple of donuts for some reason being sure that one was with cheese, and the other one was with chocolate but not!! The beans were waiting for me even there!))) I had a strong impression that Koreans added those beans everywhere.

I also managed to try two unusual ice cream that for some strange reason I hadn’t even seen among my favourite Italian gelato. I am talking about a cheese ice cream and grape one. I liked them both but the cheese one seemed tastier for me.

16

7

I really liked Pepero. It’s a sweet stick in chocolate glaze or in coconut, with cheese or almonds, etc… There was Pepero day celebrated on November the 11th in South Korea. A couple of weeks before the day all the supermarkets began to sell these most delicious sticks. The holiday reminded of Valentine’s Day and it had its own traditions and rituals: couples in love were eating these sweets in a special way on 11/11. (Just like in the good old Disney cartoon “Lady and the tramp”)

227849

(Photos were taken from the internet)

One of our students (Shihan Kim) was very generous and took us all (about 20 people I think) to a restaurant in order to try Korean national food. That evening we tasted a pancake with vegetables and seafood in it, a pancake made from kimchi (Korean spicy cabbage) and tomatoes, thinly chopped pork fried in egg and a spicy soup with kimchi and noodles in it. The guys were drinking beer and soju, the Siberian lady was drinking water)))

28.jpg

Loved those crisps with seaweed a lot.

Another time there was a party that our Turkish man (Gurkan) organized. We all went to the bar/pub where he ordered a lot of fried chicken in different types (with bones, fillets, spicy, sweet chicken) and beer. It was delicious and fun (and I am not talking about beer as I don’t like it).

2

Just to let you all know – it was not the whole plate for me but we shared it)))
It’s interesting how Koreans connect a couple or few words into one. For example famous local food is the chimek (originated from chicken and begmek which means beer). There also was a drink called somek (soju and begmek).
And while being on the flight from South Korea to Russia I looked through S7 magazine  and I found out about such a strange modern trend (and business field) like mukbang. It is when the video blogger eats fast food in front of the screen (usually a lot of food, a lot of fatty food and the blogger is a pretty slim girl or guy) and talks about his/her feelings. I hope I will not offence someone but honestly I don’t understand why people would watch such weird things and spend their priceless time on this kind of things! Whatever I say it’s gaining tens and hundreds of thousands of views! The magazine that was on the plane informed that “mukbang” originated almost 10 years ago in Korea and the word was formed from two: meokneun (“to eat”) and bangsong (“translation”). So it looks like the Koreans are still inventors of words and not just words but whole cultures, concepts and trends.

Once I was really lucky to visit one of my students house. Her mother cooked lunch and I really enjoyed it! I was especially impressed with the dish called chapche. I mean I am not talking about being impressed but rather loving it, the taste of it. It’s my Korean cup of tea)). Unfortunately I haven’t tried it again since that time (but already found a Korean restaurant in Saint Petersburg where they had it!) I plan to go there one day.

9.jpg

Another time we went with the guys to the restaurant as we wanted to try the famous Samgyeopsal. It took me about a week to memorize this name (forget the paragraph were I was bragging about my good memory). Anyway Samgyeopsal is grilled pork belly and the name literally means “three layer flesh”.

8

That time I was sitting with my loved ones: the Frenchman Jeremy, the Latvian man Ervins and the Polish girl Dominika (although she did not eat, she just sat with us, for the company). I liked the dish because I generally love meat. But of course it is quite heavy and I would not eat it often. Fortunately afterwards we went to a nightclub and did some dancing. It was possible to burn the calories eaten and get another portion of happiness because dancing is such a bliss for me!

My dear readers, as I have visited quite a lot of places during my stay in Korea and I simply do not have the physical ability (and especially I am lack of time) to talk about everything, I will post some photos so you’ll get a better idea of my Korea. And if one day you decide to go to South Korea, to visit some of “my” places then please do not hesitate to contact me. I will answer your questions if possible and I will try to help you! Though nowadays my life is busier than ever…

I liked Gyeongju very much. However it was very cold there on my arrival even for a girl from Siberia. Honestly I hardly managed to cope with that cold! Apparently I’m not Frozen, just Natasha (and it looks like not from Russia)). In any case the city made a big impression on me because I stopped near the hanok village where there was a large concentration of traditional Korean houses and all these buildings looked amazingly surrounded by autumn colors of foliage of trees, as well as girls and boys dressed in national costumes.

Seoul
At the end of my teaching course my way was lying to Russia but through the capital of South Korea – Seoul. And although I planned to be there almost for a whole week I decided trying to find a shelter through coachsurfing (I will not tell you about this site in details as I have covered this subject already a couple or a few times on my blog). I was a bit nervous because I was looking for options, plunging into the profiles of hosts, sending them messages, and I had no answers…until one day when my Latvian friend advised me to create a so-called Public Trip, where I wrote in a few words about myself and asked people kindly to host me for 6 days in Seoul. Right after that I started to get offers but all of them were from men and quite often with the offer of sharing a room or even a bed. For those who have never used the services of the site this may sound strange but I’m sure that there is nothing horrible in it and many people have really spent the night on the same bed with a stranger but I was not ready for such a risky proposition so I had been looking for a long time and I found the beautiful Mongolian girl Undra who by that time had been living in Seoul for the seventh years and spoke Korean and English languages fluently.

When I arrived in Seoul Undra met me at the underground station near her house and I must say I liked her at first sight. Arriving at her little cozy studio she immediately offered me to eat what she had cooked before and was very hospitable and kind all the time of my stay there.

53

Dear Undra, writing this I do remember our lovely conversations, sharing stories and emotions, dancing together, laughing and cooking…I am still very thankful for the life that I have met you in Seoul! And here I want to apologize that for the 5 months since the time I left you I have sent you just a couple of messages and I have become a very bad person at keeping in touch with all the friends I love and adore. My life is really busy and I remember about you even if I don’t text you! (Like with everyone else) I know you understand me and thank you for that!

I visited several wonderful places in Seoul. One of them was the library which was opened in a shopping center only in June 2017 (I was there in November 2017). Another advantage of couchsurfing is staying with a local that in my case was charming Undra. She advised me to visit this book paradise about which I hadn’t known and many guidebooks hadn’t covered this point. Arriving there I felt like Belle from “Beauty and the Beast” which was my favorite childhood cartoon.

54

The only thing I was missing there was a beast or a prince and almost the whole library was in Korean language and there were a lot of people in the hall. But non of those facts could let me down and my great mood. I was over the moon that time! In addition to that this whole beautiful atmosphere was supplemented with amazing music played there. I spent more than an hour there or maybe even two hours! I tried to find books in English but it was equivalent to finding an Italian person in Busan))). Though I found magazines in English and looked through one about traveling. I really liked the phrase: “life is just one big journey” so I thought it was about my life (and hopefully about yours whoever read this).

DSC_1141

54

Of course I could not skip to mention the one and only Gangnam district! It’s the same one which Psy sings about in his amazingly popular song “Gangnam Style”. The area consists of futuristic towers (skyscrapers) and is different from many places I’ve seen before.

DSC_1147

Despite the fact that the Gangam area is very expensive there is a shopping center under the ground which you will see immediately when you arrive at the subway station. I was also advised to visit it by Undra. There are a lot of things: clothes, shoes, accessories, food and a lot of discounts, sales. Obviously there are not all the things have good quality but most of them are. As talking about food (again, I know))) I really liked the shop with bread stuffed. They sold bread with chocolate, bread with cheese, with sweet potatoes, with red beans (of course, there is no place without the beans, haha) and something else. I must admit I became a sinner! I bought bread with chocolate and OMG! There was this great chocolate not only on the bread but there was also a lot of melted “sweet drug” inside. It was unrealistically tasty and very caloric but I could indulge myself as it was “op, op, opa, Gangam style”. I ate a loaf at once. I’ve never done this and I usually don’t eat bread at all. My conclusion is that I should never ever move to this city. I will be addicted to that bread, ahah. There won’t be any photos because I am afraid to put it here)))

And I also went to the park as I wanted to visit this famous I . Seoul U. It’s kind of like a local landmark. I really liked the park where those letters were located and I even managed to swing in the cold. And I also took some photos of myself frozen and realized that the best make-up was happiness!

50

52

Still so much has been left behind the scenes! I cannot say how much I would like to write and show but as you understand life dictates its conditions. Just imagine I was in Korea from October to December and only today (about 5 months later) I found the time to write about it! And there were so many things happened after I left Korea and what a pity that I didn’t have some time to write about it (as I spent 1 month in Lapland, about a month in Helsinki, 2 weeks in Germany, a month in Saint Petersburg and a  few days in Denmark, Sweden).

Therefore my dears I wish you to have more time, to be happy and feel the moment! This moment is YOUR LIFE! Don’t waste it for nothing! I know it’s very obvious but I wanted to write here, once more time and who knows, maybe I’ll change your life a bit.

It took me ages to write this post, I hope you did enjoy reading it and I apologize for any grammar mistakes in the text 🙂

Best wishes, from yours NATASHA…with LOVE!

Once upon a time in Moscow

Hello my lovely friends! It happened that I had to go and I went to Moscow, but since it’s  not an endless city I returned back to the city on the Neva. But even in the short time that I was in the Russian capital I collected some information, experiences and photos, that decided to share with you my friends! And I’m just a cunning fox as I am lazy (and don’t have much time) to tell and send photos to all the friends so I find it easier to say once and copy the link of the blog many times 🙂 . Yes, the high-speed 21st century dictates its own rules while Nokia is still connecting people)

My purpose of going to Moscow was job-training about which I won’t tell you here I suppose. As they say a girl should be a little puzzle/secret, and as I am most of the time an opened book, then let Pac Group will be a little bit of mystery of my life… have I just written it?? !! Oh, yeah, of course…

So…Moscow that does not believe in tears, never sleeps and Moscow that is calling… I will not say much about the most popular attractions such as Red Square, the Kremlin and so on but share my little surprises about the city. Upon arrival in the capital of Russia I looked in a Russian searching engine for unusual places to visit in Moscow. Of course I found lots of interesting things but alas could actually visit only 0.0001 out of the list. For example while meeting with my good old friend we went to the hotel “Ukraine” (wait! I am not sharing any private life, ahaha, continue reading please), as there was the Kremlin’s layout. I must say the hotel itself was very impressive by its grandeur and luxury. As it turned out afterwards, the majority of people living and visiting  the capital didn’t even hear of this layout  therefore, my friends, if you are ever in Moscow I strongly advise you all to visit the hotel Ukraine! Go through the hall and in front of you there will be the city center, at a glance: with architectural buildings, trees, bridges, cars, etc. Moreover the installation of lighting changes and thus evening Moscow is replaced by the night one, morning and so on. It’s very nice, interesting and impressive! I advise you to have a look!!

Since my photos are not the best ones I present to you photos of others that were absolutely brazenly taken by me on the Internet.

In one of the warm days during my stay I visited VDNKh (Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy). I just want to share some photos and this time let the others take them brazenly from me)))

It said “Happiness is not behind the mountains” on the building (look down)

For 5 days that I spent in Moscow I think I went to GUM (the department store; but should have actually go to Gym no Gum, ahaha) more than 5 times))) and therefore I feel I will rent one of the benches there for the night next time. When the weather was lovely and sunny I was there hiding from the right lifestyle and diet and tasted incredibly delicious ice cream in cups (though I did try only cherry and chocolate flavour, not so much but it was enough to fall in love with this department store!), on another occasion I was hiding from the rain and wind that ruthlessly attacted me for my not lovely feelings to Moscow. And I also really liked design of the GUM  with its bright bicycles, painted benches and most importantly with a large tree in the center of the shop with colorful birdhouses and birds singing. And even if it was only recorded I felt the spring, bloom, the beginning of something new and simply LIFE while being in the store! Passing my greetings and best wishes to the designer and inspirer! (Surely, they are my regular readers)))

Magical world of “Erarta”

Hi all, that adore cultural events! How are you, my dear friends? (do you hear the rhyme? I know I am superb, ahaha and modest). I hope the sun is shining where you are and if the weather is “sad” and the sky “is crying”, then perhaps the sun shines inside you!! Well, it should!

tumblr_static_tumb

A lot of things has happened over the past couple of months, and I so much wish I could share all of experience, information, photos…so here I am with another story for you, my friends!

Today I would like to tell you about my quite recent visit to the Museum of Modern Art called “Erarta”.

f119f91e5c5073b1b6773da396ba4bef

I must say, I was warned in advance that it’s not as good as Saatchi Gallery (which is in London) and in many different aspects Erarta losing in comparison with the other London galleries and museums. Anyway, it was good that I was warned before the visit so I didn’t expect something really extraordinary and therefore I actually loved it.

Her Highness of Art “Erarta” surprised me already at the entrance: there was a very interesting sculpture in the form of a rotating sphere with different textures, lines, points, and so on. The main thing was that it (a ball or more precisely a disk) could be rotated! Interactivity is our everything! And two very unusual  statues at the entrance were also creating a sense of something magical and intriguing…

1 2

I propose that I will not talk about all the rooms, exhibitions and museum staff, but just tell you about the most memorable works of contemporary art that I saw there. Let’s get started.

My attention was drawn to the technique using colored tape. In my opinion, it’s a very interesting, bright, detailed and rather laborious work. Please have a look and judge yourself.

3

In this particular room (that I am talking about right now) there were works one way or another connected with the city on the Neva River, with some different facts, that were giving the city a charm, grandeur and individuality. And one of the things that shocked me and thus remembered was  St. Petersburg being the third largest city in Europe by the number of citizens in it. Prize-winning places were distributed as follows: 1. Moscow (12 million) 2. London (8 million), 3. St. Petersburg (5 million). Immediately I had a thought coming to my mind: it must be so hard to live in Moscow. Although, I must say that London with its big population has never provided me with the inconveniences, and even on the contrary – it gave me its love and it was mutual!

I do not remember what it was and how it was called, but for some reason I want to call it a “shattering reality.” (the photo below)

4

Magic carpet or “airplane-carpet”))) (in such moments, you realize that the genius lies on the surface)

5

There were also some self-portraits of the artists represented in the museum. All portraits were individual, unusual and many of them captured my attention, because each artist (and hence the portrait) had (and still has) its own soul! Here is one of them – quite creative, isn’t it?

6

And this was a creative and fun installation in the museum. I like it as it captured my attention! I always enjoy the things that stand out from the crowd. I can imagine that this work calls us to take any forms of art easy, especially in the modern world… or maybe vice versa: it is trying to draw our attention to the disappearing art which existed earlier.

7

What else…there was a plaque with a famous person’s statement about art on each floor, next to an elevator. I loved all of them and one particular I want to share with you, dear people!

8

I would translate it as the following: “An artist and a buyer are two crazy people. One paints a picture for no reason and another one buys it for no reason”© Boris Borsch.

I always kind of suspected that I was a little crazy, but Boris Borsch only confirmed this fact.

This is a painting made by Vladimir Migachev “Oil” written in 2008. In truth, I do not know what attracted me to this creation. In my personal opinion oil is a product that somehow associated with the pollution, something poisonous and not really natural (though it is so necessary in the modern world). And the picture itself is kind of dark and gloomy, it gives somewhat rainy, sad feelings … and at the same time I really liked it! Perhaps it corresponded to my inner mood at the time I was observing it. I am not really sure…

9

This was a 3D picture (or whatever it’s called?)) or it was just my split personality (you can see my reflection on the photo). It was nice to try a new fantastic face, even for a few moments.

10

Here it is!!! This is the masterpiece that won me over. In my opinion, this is just super! As many of you guessed it’s  “The dance” by Henri Matisse in its new interpretation with some dancing going on around the Christmas tree on Red Square in Moscow. I was just thrilled, but I am not really sure how Matisse would feel about it)))

11

Dolce and Gabbana – how can one live without them))) This painting was pretty huge (as the designers themselves). You may not understand from the photo but the work of art occupied a pretty large part of the wall. What did the author want to tell us by this? I cannot be sure but perhaps it illustrates the 21st century where your look is more important than personality and that people meet you by the clothes (at least for the first time). We can see the shirt and the huge one but there is not a person that wearing it.

And another very bold masterpiece – “The Last Supper” by Pavel Grishin. I think there is no need in any comments and, of course, it’s quite different when it’s seen live.

13

I would like to finish with the exhibition, that I was very impressed with, shocked, surprised…(and the other verbs that convey certain state of “Surprise”)). It was an exhibition of the Mad Hatter, a hairdresser and stylist, a Frenchman by his origin – Charlie Le Mindu. In truth, his biography really amazed be and inspired in some ways, and so I decided to upload a photo with the text of his life. Maybe you can be inspired as much as I was)).

01

Without saying much,  here are some photos for you. My dear friends, the only thing I wanted to mention is the fact that almost all the exhibits, dresses, wigs were made by Charlie and his team from natural hair!!! Thus I can conclude that probably all the materials can be used in the art field … but, you never know))

Hello my very dear and very patient readers. At least, I’m stable and predictable in my rare appearance here, on the blog page.

Today I would like (albeit a bit late) to congratulate you with 2015 New Year! I hope it will be a happy, memorable, special and stunning year for all of you, that will bring a lot of joy and love and all your desires, goals, aspirations will become true incredibly soon, lovelies! And here is a quick sketch I made as an addition to my congratulations 🙂

I also wanted to say “bye-bye” or better to say “see you soon”. In fact, I’m planning  to take a very important for me international French exam in March. Unfortunately, I still continue to think in Russian, in rare cases, in English and therefore French language is like my abandoned child, waiting for its hour of triumph. I want to change the situation and in this regard, I think I need to not pay much attention to other languages and that is why I decided not to write in the blog, until I pass the exam or wait for some miracle, like maybe one day I wake up and I realize that I dream and think in the language of love! Considering the fact that I write here pretty rare, I believe many of you won’t even notice an absence of a fairytale character in your life (Cinderella I mean).

I would also like to share with you my happy news. I was selected as the highest voted  winner in the Canadian singer Kiesza’s competition, which I’m still extremely happy about. Thank you for your support, your faith and love! Here you can see the results of the competition if you have any interest in it. https://www.talenthouse.com/i/sozdai-web-art-dlya-kiesza/submissions/popular

I hope I will come back as a new Frenchwoman)), more joyous (after the exam), inspired and, of course, will share with you my methods of studying a foreign language (s), and will introduce you to a wonderful chef, magician of wonderfoodland))… And for now – I simply wish you all the very very best and see you when I see you, dears.

Budapest, Gyönyörű vagy (you are beautiful)!

As Chevalier d’Eon said (a very interesting French diplomat and spy, who belonged to the secret network of spies called “Secret du Roi”):

“With the time, everything is changing, and the world around, and there are only words that are left …”, so I continue my story and present (=leave) the words for you, my dear friends. Hello again!

My absence has been long here and I do realise it. And as always I have few reasons for that: it’s my creative flight in the world of art (recently designed a tattoo for a client), immersion in the language of love, that filled with flavor of fresh baguette, captivating cheese and lulling (or the opposite – rocking) wines, an exciting make-up course and simply laziness (yes, this happens to me sometimes)! Here’s a few reasons of the 1001 reasons for my absence and the mysterious silence, my dears.

So today-post is going to be about a truly fabulous city called Budapest which is the capital of Hungary. Frankly speaking, my ideas and expectations about the country and the city itself were not so great and I didn’t feel so much joy and excitement for going there. I don’t really know the reason of this feeling, maybe it came from the name of the city which didn’t sound amazing to me or maybe because I never really came across to the information about it. I think I was going there rather with a happy thought  to add a new point to my list “I was there, drank beer and mead that barely got my mustache wet” © A.Pushkin.

According to my plan (the travelling one) I had the only day to see Budapest. It was just an interjacent point of my chain of travels and wanderings in Europe.

Since my time in Milan (my previous stop) was also limited (I spent there only 3 days as you probably know from another post I wrote on the blog), I did not have time to prepare myself for Budapest. I didn’t manage to learn Hungarian and to read about the attractions and sightseeing there so, in general, I felt like an alien, who arrived in an uncharted area. Fortunately, at the airport, the first thing I noticed was a tourist office and asked all the questions I had and got a window into the world of Hungary, more precisely the map of Budapest with all the information about different tourist interests ad goodies narrated in the card itself. I asked the man in the office which underground station I needed in order to see the center of the city and decided to go there straight away after having a breakfast somewhere (the station I needed was called Ferenciek Tere, on the blue line), and then just walk around the city, absolutely aimlessly.

However, already in the subway, I was involved in the experience of visiting a new country for me! Everything was interesting, unusual to me: the citizens themselves (I was staring at the way they were dressed, how they behaved, etc. It was just like  American series “Lie to Me”)), the announcement of stations such as Kőbánya-Kispest, for example…it was a wonder! By the way, totally forgot to mention that the underground ticket I bought at the airport was an unlimited day-ticket for huge amount of money!! More precisely, the price was actually good, or rather cheap (compared, for example, with the prices of transport in Paris or London), but the numbers were frightening, because one euro equals about 300 HUF!! In currency exchange I even thought that I was “cheated” and was given 10 times more than I should have gotten))) it’s definitely the best place on the planet, ahah.

An example ( price for 1kg of bananas)

71

So I got to the station Ferenciek Tere and then I went for a walk around the city. My plan was to stroll along the embankment of the Danube while observing attractions close to the river. It is believed that diamonds (definitely not maps) are the girls’ best friends but somehow I felt responsible for all of our women’s regiment therefore I carefully and diligently studied all the squiggles Hungarian letters, schemes of buildings and roads’ turns on the way to His Highness the Danube! In fact, I did find what I was looking for, although was a bit lost at first (of course, I made it purposely only in order not to ruin the stereotype about the relationship of women and maps))).

On my way to stunning views of the river, in the anticipation that I was, I had already met interesting buildings, staff, and even a kind of a Malevich’s black square.

I really liked the building of New Budapest Gallery, which located on the Danube embankment.

7

8

To be honest, I did not quite understand where I was. I mean that I saw some art objects inside the building, but as I understood, it was not a gallery but a shop located side by side with the world of art.

10

11

Since I have that many emotions from what I saw there and I, frankly, do not know how to describe those impressions that the city made on me, so I’ll just introduce you to my little photo-exhibition titled “Walk on the waterfront” and then again I will go into the story with the light, carefully verified musical notes of “The Blue Danube” …

“To be or not to be?” (c) –  if it’s in Budapest – of course the answer is TO BE!! 😉

Love this balcony, looks creative!

21

22

Chain Bridge was designed by an English engineer William Tierney Clark and the constraction of the bridge was supervised by Scottish engineer Adam Clark. The bridge was shown in the movie “I Spy”.

23

24

It was very hot on the waterfront, under the scorching sun, especially in jeans and a black T-shirt that I was wearing (I know how to choose clothes for the weather)). In fact, my light summer clothes were in the suitcase in the airport). So I decided to have some rest from the heat, buy something edible in a store and have a kind of lunch in the park under the shadows of foliage. In the area I went to, I saw a monument with an inscription in Russian: «Слава Советским Героям Освободителям» (= “Glory to the Heroes of the Soviet Liberators”).

25

I liked the name of the shop – “Grey Goose”. In Russia we have a kids song that is about two geese (grey and white) that were living at granny’s place 🙂 (this is it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgo-7DjW39Y)

28

And here it is – the beauty, more precisely – The Hungarian Parliament Building! I will write about it later, in the part of my “evening cruise” (and so the curtain was opened, the secret was revealed).

Here are some lovely views of the building of the parliament and its surroundings.

27

30

31

32

29

I felt really sorry for the guys, that stood under the red-hot sun, without moving. What a hard job!

33

While strolling along the river I spotted advertising cruises on the Danube. I decided to get closer to some of the docs and inquire about the variations of cruises offered and their price. I really enjoyed reading brochures in Russian. Apparently, this job was done by Google. I don’t know – maybe German version sounds funny as well (unfortunatelly, I cannot understand what it’s saying).

26

The prices ranged from 4,000 to 13,000 forints or so (after staying in the euro environment, such figures are, of course, scared me, but a little effort of remembering the basics of mathematics and everything fell into place. Finally, I decided that an evening cruise it’s a great opportunity to see the city in the light of night with its festive appearance. Besides, I remembered how extremely happy I was on my twenty-first birthday, when celebrating it with my best friends in the evening cruise on the River Thames, with the enchanting views of the capital of Great Britain. So the decision was made, the ticket was bought and there were still a few hours left before the beginning of the cruise, so I decided to see the city in a rapid pace and in few minutes I was already sitting on the bus or tram (do not remember exactly) observing magical Budapest from the window of transport.

I felt a bit uncomfortable, considering the fact that I had no idea where I was going to, while also not speaking the language and not knowing the city at all, and I was afraid to end up in a village or something like that)) But, as I said earlier, I had a ticket for transport for the whole day and I knew that if I got lost, I could always sit on the same trucks and go in the opposite direction. At some point of my trip, I saw something that reminded (very slightly) me beloved Notre Dame Cathedral, and so I decided to get off the bus, walk a little (though the cathedral I saw was too far (talking about the appearance of it) from the Parisian one).

34

Still not sure where exactly I went to, but I also found a local market, filled with bright flavors of juicy fruits and vegetables, blending smoothly into the space with spices and other goodies and fun. Ah, I should have stayed there forever)))

35

36

And then I have to thank my own intuition. Being totally unprepared for this trip, without any plans where to go and what to see, I just saw on the map some pond and decided to move there. I found the closest to my destination underground station and went to…Hősök tere (that is how the station was called). The view impressed me from the first steps after the exit of the underground station.

37

As it turned out, I came to one of the most famous squares of the capital – the Heroes’ Square. The tall column, located in the center of the square is dedicated to the millennium of the Magyar transition through the Carpathians. There was (and still is, lets hope) the figure of the Archangel Gabriel on the globe with the apostolic cross and the crown of the King Stephen at the top of the monument.

39

According to a legend, the Archangel Gabriel came to the king in his dream and told him to convert Hungarians to Christianity. There were Prince Árpád and the seven Magyar tribes represented at the base of the column too. There were also two semi-circular colonnade which was a monument dedicated to the heroes of Hungary. There were diverse bronze sculptures of representatives of several dynasties between the columns. And The Museum of Contemporary Art with The Museum of Fine Arts were also located on the square (which I unfortunately couldn’t visit because of the lack of time I had there).

38

It was interesting to watch such actions at the Square. Perhaps this was a new interpretation of the American computer-animated film “Cars”))

40

After enjoying the views of the area, I kept walking further, deep into the wonderland! I am talking now about the city-park called Városliget (Varoshliget). As I learnt later, this park was hunting grounds long time ago, and grazing cattle…Now the area of the park is 1 km² and its territory contains about 7000 trees, and there are also several artificial lakes. According to Wikipedia (I am using very intelligent source, ahaha) there are famous Szechenyi Baths, Capital Circus, Zoo, Museum of Transport, as well as a famous restaurant in Budapest “Gundel”, which is over 150 years old located in the park Varoshliget. I vaguely trying to remember seeing anything from the list. In fact, the park is certainly very rich with its fairy-entailing views.

41

43

Lets swim with a car 🙂

My colleagues. Their wish to draw such a beauty is understandable.

45

Found this lovely couple…

57

and another one…

I believe one duck was asking another one to marry him)) but the second was like: “Oh, I am not sure. I need some time to think about it”)) (As you can all see I am going mad a bit).

58

47

48

50

51

53

55

52

If I had a bit more time I could probably transfrom into Alice and enjoy this wonderland in another angle…;)

54

56

I would like to add a bit more information about the mentioned above restaurant “Gundel” for fans, lovers and admirers of London (which I consider myself). Honestly, for some strange reasons, I didn’t find the restaurant I was talking about there, but after my trip to Budapest I found an interesting fact, which stated that in London’s Soho there was (and still is) a restaurant called “Gay Hussar”, whose founder (Victor Sassi) at his 17ties was sent by the British Association of hotels and restaurants for kind of training to “Gundel” in Budapest.

And my hunger led me to Varosliget Cafe & Bar 1895. The atmosphere was cozy and pretty quiet there, I sat outside as the weather was lovely (not too hot already), and it was good that during my meal, I was also able to charge my bitten apple, my American friend. I ordered the Hungarian national dish which was goulash, that perhaps was not original to do so, but the most important thing was me being full and happy after this lunch-dinner.

60 61

So, the time was going and I slowly slowly was getting to the point, more precisely to my evening cruise on His Majesty Danube. So I decided to have a little walk and then take the subway to the center, to the pier of the happiness.

On the way to the boat, that was waiting for Cinderella (me), I saw some other boats that were probably expecting other Cinderellas with their own stories and adventures.

63

64

My cruise was the average price, inexpensive at all, no frills (there wasn’t a course of meal, neither there was live music on board), but the price included a glass of booze and an audio guide in several languages (including Russian). I was very glad to hear that woman’s voice in my player (or better to say the information she was telling there). She talked about every architectural structure, monument or area we were passing, with different stories and interesting facts involved in her speech. For example, I remember well that the amount of money spent on the construction of the building of the Hungarian Parliament, was so huge that this amount would be enough to build a small town (village) for 30 000 citizens, with its infrastructure, roads, etc.! By the way, the Houses of Parliament simply mesmerizing while shimmering in the night lights.

At the end of our little journey there was “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss played in the audio-guide. For a lady like I am, who used to dance and still dancing, the music touched me because even when I’m not on the dance-floor, I mentally circling in waltz. It was such a magnificent combination of melodic music, beautiful sparkling buildings and structures on the Danube, and the fresh coolness of the Hungarian night. Those impressions I got on the cruise are still stayed with me, as if it was only yesterday.

Then I said “goodbye” (not without sadness, but with hope to visit this wonderful city again) to Budapest, went to the subway station, then by bus to the airport and didn’t have the best night of my life at the airport. The thing was that the plane I needed was going to take off in the early morning and therefore it wasn’t convenient  to go to a hotel (as in few hours I would need to go back) or somewhere else, it was easier to feel in the shoes of the hero of Tom Hanks in mister Spielberg’s  movie “The Terminal”.

02

Though I personally believe that Viktor Navorski’s conditions were much better in the film than mine in reality. Budapest Airport was really small, with rigid and cold chairs made of metal. In addition, almost all (though if I’m not mistaken, absolutely all) shops and cafes were closed at the airport for the night, and it was hard to stay positive without the comfort, evening bath and cup of tea)))

In other words, that night was a kind of nightmare, but at the same time it was a lot of fun when I was trying to sleep, lying on those metal chairs and occasionally slightly opened my eyes and saw some people sitting and swaying their bodies in the rhythm of sleep or a snoring girl somehow miraculously fitted on her suitcase. Overall, I felt that I was not alone in my sad situation and it gave me the strength I needed, and anyway I still was on cloud nine because of my expectations that were not supported and the reality surpassed all that I was preparing to see in Budapest, in the city, which name didn’t promised me some kind of magic, excitement and trepidation (as I believed before to see it)! BUT I so much loved this fantastic city!

See you soon, dear friends! I wish you marvelous discovers and that reality will always exceed your expectations! With the best wishes from the lover of life (and from now on the lover of Budapest too)!

Paris. Art. Fashion.

Good day, dear friends! And if it is not good yet, then it will change soon! I am sure about it, and sincerely wish you so!

As you have probably noticed it became a good (sad) tradition for me to absent on my blog for weeks or even a month. Of course, I would like to write more, to share the joy, albeit a bit shrouded in sadness (yes, sometimes it does happen with your  happy writer))

And the reason of my long absence from the blog was my immersion in everyday life, as well as an artistic life too. For example, I finally registrated on Instagram and was also working  with my muse by one side. You can observe some of my old and (soon) new creations by clicking on this link http://instagram.com/smita_art . By the way, I want to assure you that I’m not a two-faced person! I’m  many-faced: I am Natasha from Russia and Cinderella from Westminster, and now Smita … yes, this is my new nickname on Instagram. This name is a Sanskrit name meaning “smiling” or “ever smiling woman” (there are diverse meanings of the name, but the main point remains the same which is a smile!) This is the name I was given in India, while was working there and discoverig the extraordinary world of mysterious Indian lands.

With my introduction of this article I wanted to show (probably once again) that art is somehow my life, my happiness, positive and many other things therefore I dedicate this post to the beauty (meaning art), which I have been able to discover in Paris! Thus, I will finish my story about the city of love and light (till the time I am reunited with it again) and continue with something else, but also bright and beloved…

During my quite a long and certainly a magical stay in Paris, I have visited completely different museums and galleries, not similar to each other. Today I will cover only some of them…

I would like to begin the beautiful story with Ilya and Emilia Kabakov’s exhibition (Soviet-American artists born in Dnepropetrovsk who have achieved success in Moscow), which was held in Paris, at the Grand Palais museum.

k11

This exhibition made a great impression on me, so I’m having some difficulties with choosing certain aspects of what I saw and putting my emotions and impressions all together. So I decided to offer you (my dear amateurs and professionals of the art) to read an article by The Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/may/09/the-strange-city-ilya-emilia-kabakov-monumenta-grand-palais) which, in my opinion, reveals this story very well, providing enough information, and I will also share my personal feelings on the subject.

Of course, the Grand Palais impresses, even outside, before to enter it. So, I am showing to all of you the birth of a new great photographer (as I am)))

0222222222222222222222

Extraordinary facade cannot leave a visitor or a stranger passing by, untouched! No! It catches your attention, it stands out! Ah, Paris, Paris! Ah, the Grand Palais!

01 02

This amazing staircase with its ornateness, cutouts and interweaving different parts of it, reminded me of the candles, that I saw in Croatia (about 10 years ago). The stairs was magical, even looking at it was a great pleasure.

022222222 02222222222

And why to not take a nap in a museum?

0111111

So back to the exhibition by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. Their installations, paintings and especially presentation of the art amazed me! I did feel like in a maze of incredible artistic plexus. I was losing and again finding myself among this unusual art as theirs.

The room shown on the following picture surprised me by its design. The paintings were presented in a kind of mosaic, puzzle (I think everyone can pick their own way of describing it).

033333 033333333

The white space was only dividing the paintings, as if framing them, but at the same time connecting them with each other. This part of the exhibition was presenting, in my opinion, the line of Soviet life: the village people, the old huts, untouched nature and so on.

But it was not the room that amazed me the most. For example, one of the parts of the “Strange City” as the artists called the exposition themselves was the room with a subject “How to meet an angel?” Besides the fact that the paintings and installations were interesting, the artists have also written detailed explanations to their works, which were so beautiful and touching that I personally gained a great experience and inspiration while reading the descriptions. I’ll try to briefly convey what I admired most, having been in the Grand Palais, a “strange city” or precisely the universe of Kabakov.

The theme “How to meet an Angel” begins with the arguments that people do not believe in a such opportunity, it is considered insane and non-negotiable. But the authors of written assure that the facts say different, and that a very important part of the meeting with the angel is the level space “where such meetings can take a place.” Then they wrote (translated from Russian by me): “the probability and even better, the inevitability of such meetings is approximately at the height of 1200-1400 meters above sea level in the mountainous regions, respectively, in the mountains of a similar height…But there is one thing that is not always taken into account: encounter with an angel or angels – it is always an extreme case, happening in crisis, critical moments in human life, and the man himself, while being in this condition, needing such assistance, encourages it.” And then Kabakov explain that they are artificially creating such a situation, offering a project of building a “ladder to heaven”, with a height of 1200 meters. A man should climb up into the clouds to meet face to face with nature, its mighty force, and then comes the very moment of meeting an angel or angels.

Photo with the plan of the project and an explanation of it (though in Russian)

022

In another work of Kabakov the theme is taking a slightly different angle. There they are talking about “how to change yourself” in a better, more moral side. They mention some of the ways, and then present to the audience their own method of transforming a person in the better one. The way consists of creating their own wings of white tulle and leather straps (as pictured below), which must be put on and worn for a while, while being alone in a room or house and doing nothing at this time. They also recommend the repetition of this procedure every day for several weeks and then the result will come!

03 0333333333333

The things that were illustrated and described there impressed me very much indeed because it was in some ways similar to my point of view: wonderful, unusual, bright and joyful. What is more valuable in this situation is that the artists were not kids, Ilya Kabakov, for example, in his 80s now! I think his way of seeing things (and his wife (part-time colleague)) is to see the world bright, magical and experience life as children waiting for miracles. It’s so beautiful! Hardly and rarely you can meet a man 70-80 years old who are advising to wear wings, made of tulle!

Many thanks to Ilya and Emilia Kabakov – for their amazing universe, Paris – for the wonderful exhibition at the Grand Palais, the first channel (Russian one) – so successfully reporting about the event, and my parents who knew about the exhibition from the first channel, before me, that was staying in Paris that time.

0222 02222 03333 022222 0222222222222222

There was another discovery for me which was the exhibition of Dries Van Noten, held in the Musee de la Mode et du Textile (near the Louvre). In truth, before this solo exhibition of Dries Van Noten, his name was unfamiliar for me, and that’s why I was even more interested to get acquainted with his work. I am not an expert in the field of fashion but his creations were really marvelous. I enjoyed what I saw there.

0000000000000

Design and decor of the exhibition, presentation of the material, models themselves – everything was top notch! Each hall was carrying a certain sense, the concept of an echo of its time. In addition to that, in each room the visitor could read about the idea of the project represented directly in the room, to see the photo or artist’s inspiration next to the model itself, the creation of which was born on the soil of what he saw before. For instance, there was a dress, decorated with butterflies and a colorful art-piece with butterflies made by a very popular and well-known British artist Damien Hirst (I  remember visiting one of his exhibitions in London like it was yesterday. He is a very bright artist with his unusual creations) .

000000000000 00000000000

And here are some more photos from the exhibition. In my opinion, Dries Van Noten absolutely deserved such an honor to be presented in the mentioned above museum. His amazing collections are colorful, stylish, professional, harmonious, definitely made with love. How beautiful his world is!

00000000000000 0000000000 000000000

000000 00 000 0000 00000

There was another museum, which I found really extraordinary and it was called the Palais de Tokyo. It really doesn’t fit into the usual. Already on the museum’s threshold you “meet” with some sloppy dirt and sculpture of a woman painted badly.

222222222 22222222

The museum itself continues a chain of “oddities” and surprises along the way of “meeting with the beauty”. For example, one of the installations I have seen there was a band saw, mounted on the ceiling and breaking through the mattress (which it was destroying) motor fixed on the ceiling in the same place (the author: Vivien Roubaud). Of course, I stopped to look at this “miracle of art,” but to be honest I stopped mostly because of being surprised and perhaps even shocked, that I was still in the museum and experienced such strange art. However, I don’t consider myself as a conservative woman and I adore modern art but maybe not everything in it.

333333

Although there were installations that impressed me in the good sense of the word. For example, in one of the rooms, I came across an installation that was necessary to start observing it from the second floor (while the works were on the first one), there were various stories / films shown using spotlights on the floor (the ground floor). It was very unusual, unpredictable and interesting. In addition, many subjects touched my soul, as they were illustrating the true human feelings, the needs of people, their behavior during periods of war and so on. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that several spotlights showed subjects in Russian language (translated into French).

2222222 2222 22222

I also loved the picture devoted to the stunning city of New York. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you, my dears, who is the author of the work, but I can say that I really liked the collage, the choice of the presented objects there and the color combination. I think this picture shows the diversity of the city, where there are different parts of it are interwoven and connected into a harmonious creation.

222

There was another interesting work that caught my attention. (A very clever use of the subject and the light)

33333333

Moreover, while wandering through the maze of such mysterious contemporary art, I got into some absolutely strange world of tires, cardboard and styrofoam! Yes, it was a part of the museum as well! Although it’s more working part because there you can find “small offices”, built on the styrofoam and cardboard, sofas and TVs with different movies to choose from and so on.

3333333333 3333333333333 333333333333 33333333333

And the last museum on stage is the Parisian museum of hunting and nature (Musee de la Chasse et de la nature)

11

On the day when I visited the museum (as far as I remember it was the first Sunday in May, as the entrance to the most of museums in Paris was free), there was an exhibition of Cosmic Dance. Of course, I fell in love with the things presented there as the works were made in black and white style that is close to me and in most cases I find it harmonious, pleasing the eye and soul. Also, I did enjoy the harmony of lines and spots, shapes, all merging together.

10 8

After the “Cosmic Dance” I came to the hall dedicated to hunting with some guns represented there, though they were a work of art rather than just guns; as well as a variety of stuffed animals, many of which were made so realistic that I had shiver while passing nearby different species of wild beasts.

13 6 9

Interesting pointer/sign to one of the museum’s halls

7

But the most important discovery for me, a breath of fresh air were rooms that perfectly (in my opinion) combined realistic and contemporary art. I even had a thought of creating something similar like this in my future home, something unusual but harmonious.

12 14

And a little bit more, as a bonus for today’s article, I would like to share some photos of my last (though I am planning to come back to such a fantastic city as Paris is!)) days in the city (by saying “last” I mean this particular time). I was over the moon that Paris escorted me like I was real Cinderella, the author of colorful blog, a talented artist and a very positive friendly woman in love with the city and the most important thing in life! I was accompanied by the orchestra near the Notre Dame))), and an exhibition of grain products.

1 2 3 4 5

I hope that there were not too much of the art, creativity and photos in my post today and you will be back to the pages of my blog sometime (lets hope) soon. The next articles are going to be about travelling and discovering new countries!

Wishing you all the best, the most beautiful and stunning things, darlings!

With big love from Natasha.

In love with…Paris

International hello to everyone! I am saying “International” because I went to different countries lately (could have become a “polyglot” but still speaking only 1,5 languages))). But if being serious, here I am, please love and favour! It’s been such a long time without me sharing my experience and opening my soul for you, darlings…

Despite the fact that I am not in Paris anymore (yes, Ieft this magical city for now), and managed to visit some other interesting places (countries) in the last week, today I am continuing my French photo-report. So you are very welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the pages of my (lets hope) surprising album, enveloped in a truly French flavor of Chanel No. 5.

In the last article, I covered my unexpected meeting with Nicolas Sarkozy. The time of such interesting meetings continues. Actually, in Paris I felt as a magnet that was attracting well-known characters on its way.

It was a sunny day when I was walking down the Champs Elysees (in truth, I rushed to the museum, not noticing anyone or anything on my way, but for the more poetical narrative I prefer to say that I was walking, enjoying the amazing atmosphere of this romantic city, anyway nobody can really check))). And suddenly, my eyes caught HIM… a young man that was standing out from the crowd. He was dressed in a sport uniform with the number 10 and «Tatan» written on the back of his T-shirt. Seeing the crowd that gathered around him and professional photographers I concluded that … the museum could wait a bit 🙂

Image

Image

I didn’t ask him for an autograph or a “selfie”. Before doing so I decided to find who he was. How surprised I was when I went into the dark corner, wandering in the wilds of the Internet while searching for “Tatan 10″ and then saw him in front of me!…he actually came to me and kindly offered a sticker with his picture on it (here is an anecdote on the subject: “I bought a new microwave. It’s been two hours that I spent trying to take the label off with the words “Life is easier than it seems…” “). Continuing the story… after the sticker-gift, we (consensually) decided to take a photo together (as I didn’t have a sticker with my image for Tatan’s memory about this Siberian Parisien that was rushing to the museum)).

Image

And afterwards I found out that he was not Tatan and not a sportsman but a TV-presenter, a humorist called Maxime Musqua (by the way popular in France and I think he has about 400 000 followers on Facebook and as about me, well, I didn’t know who he was so I was really relaxed with him and he seemed to be a very lovely, funny, friendly man))

Paris – how much of sweet and tasty things merged in this word (name)! Very often I “was eating” just with looking at the shops’ windows with pastry and sweets. It somehow gave me the thought and feel of heaven or the works of art at least! I am ready to represent you, dear readers, a small selection of “tasty” pictures (with the appropriate high prices (in euros)).

Image

Image

By the way, if speaking about food. It’s been thought that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. The mystery of the question was unveiled for me in Paris! In fact, the answers lie on the surface, we just need to be a little bit watchful!

The way to a man’s heart is through the legs!)))

Image

While continuing the subject of l’amour and hearts (because it is Paris, my dears!)

That’s a sign which I found near the Louvre which was showing the way to the thing that many of us seek, found, or just going to search for…

Image

Certainly, most of us would dare to say, and even to assure that it is not possible for London or New York appear in the city of Paris, but I am breaking boundaries and uploading a small series of photos entitled “Apple (NY) and The UK in Paris”

By the way, Champs Elysees in the early rainy Sunday-morning are absolutely amazing, no people at all). Don’t get me wrong – I do love people a lot!! But it’s really nice to be alone in a place where usually all you can see is a crowd.

Image

New York and The Louvre

Image

I also cannot leave the Victory Day story untold, which I was lucky enough (or unlucky, who knows) to experience in Paris. By the way, this great holiday is celebrated on the 8th of May in France, in contrast to Russia (where we celebrate it on the 9th of May).

The weather was bad on the day or rather neutral, with a bit of rain, wind and, it was chilly too. Perhaps the sun was also celebrating the Victory day somewhere with its friends, while forgetting about us – ordinary and extraordinary mortal people, and its work to shine and delight homosapiens.

As I stayed closed to the center, where the ceremony took place, I had a choice whether to go to the Arc de Triomphe (which crowned the Champs Elysees), or the statue of Charles de Gaulle, that located about 1.1 mile from the arch. With my “perfect” French, I thought that the statue was my aim and went there. On my way I was looking at the tricolor while remembering our own, native one.

Image

How much surprised I was when I saw those half-empty streets and sidewalks! By saying this I mean that there were not many people willing to see the parade. Of course, I was kind of shocked even, knowing how many people usually come to enjoy the ceremony in Russian cities. After some time, we (The four Musketeers and I))) came to please the parade’s participants.

Image

When the horses with their riders (or better riders with their horses, who knows) lined up in a row, the orchestra played “Marseillaise” (French national anthem), which I once learnt by my heart and could well be singing, but decided to be a bit modest this time. During the national anthem and further speech, I was staying and watching the horses. Of course, most of the eyes were turned to the horse that decided to pee, right there and then, during the ceremony. It was very quiet around and no doubt, the stream was heard very well. Perhaps, it was a wrong time to do so but how one can go against nature? And I must say, I was glad about this natural behaving. After all, we (the people) all the time adjust to the different rules, the world around us, for everything and everyone, and the horse behaves naturally! It is so valuable in times of the 21st century. Well, I believe it’s my personal opinion and you may not agree with me, it’s your choice, dears.

Image

Image

When everyone left the place (and horses, and spectators as well), I was left alone with several policemen by my side. Being a naïve person, I was staying and waiting for Francois Hollande and his speech. Believe me he was about to appear and make a speech for me (apparently), as the audience consisted of the only person and that was myself. Then one of the gendarmes told me that all the actions were taking place at the Arc de Triomphe and that I, obviously, came to the wrong place. When I finally reached the point B, I realized that I didn’t have long legs from the ears (we use this expression in Russia), but from the hips only and it did not help me at all…what’s more I couldn’t even see the screen properly (which was showing  the ceremony). And these pink hair… well, it was a lucky day for me. Obviously, I had more pleasure of meeting Nicholas Sarkozy unexpectedly the other day

Image

And there was a dog on the way to the arc that attracted my attention. He was sitting and waiting for his host faithfully, that was excited about the horses’ parade. And again there is a comparison: people and animals. Citizens and tourists of Paris were so passionate while occupying the best places, gathered near the fences, when the dog didn’t bother at all and looked very tired and even sad…maybe he was thinking about eternity. I can only guess.

Image

I would also like to talk about the railway stations of Paris, not exactly about the stations themselves, but about those fabulous musical moments that I was lucky to experience there. The fact that each (at least the 4 train stations that I was able to visit during my stay in Paris) of them has a piano, where anyone can play for him/herself and for others. Since I visited many railway stations and some of them even more than once (now someone might think “yes! I knew she was staying at the station (not a studio) and most likely in a box”))), I was lucky enough to enjoy the music of different professionals. Yes, I do believe that all of them were professionals! Oh, how wonderfully they played…and mostly classics, though, I remember once there was a song “I will make a man out of you” (cartoon “Mulan”), something from Yiruma and other. I became a fan of the ”musical station” idea! Thanks to the French government or the Department of Culture! Just imagine: you are waiting for a train, or buying a ticket, or simply resting in your box)) and then all what you hear is classical music, performed on the piano! Ah, what a bliss! What a magic!

Image

The fairy tale continued with the Disney characters illustrated with the crayons on the pavement (on my way from the station). One way of making money…I cannot say that such a creativity is my cup of tea and can possibly touch my soul, but the theme chosen by the artist was close to me, because it was a lovely reminder of my childhood – the carefree, joyful, bright childhood, tightly associated with the work of such a magician Walt Disney! Seeing (and most importantly feeling) the hard work which the artist performed sitting on the road, under the scorching sun, and the tourists taking some photos of him but not paying at all, I decided to leave a couple of euros for the man though was run out of money myself. But the next day I received a larger amount of money and in a completely unexpected way, so what goes around comes around… (obvious thing), also Justin Timberlake can prove my words! ahah

Image

Paris is so beautiful and amazing that even the muse visited myself and I worked on a painting for some time, where I drew Notre Dame Cathedral in my own style. And I painted it not only near the cathedral itself but also from a distance, in the park Monceau (Monceau pronounced is “monso” can you imagine that the combination of letters «eau» reads as “o” in French! And then they (French people) say “c’est la vie”. Yes, it’s a life where sometimes they pronounce 4 letters out of 10! So anyway I would like to pay attention to this fabulous place (I mean the park). According to my faithful and all-knowing friend (talking about the Internet here), I learnt that the name of the park came from the village, which was previously located in its place and called Mousseaux. Monceau – is an English-style park with wide walking parkways, winding paths, conservatory, lovely bright flower gardens, waterfalls and cliffs, various statues, miniature Egyptian pyramid, Corinthian columns and so on. It’s not a surprise that the park inspired many artists of different genres and generations (and even a happy Siberian girl – myself).

Image

Here is a photo of Claude Monet‘s painting which he did in 1876.

Image

There is an interesting fact that happened in October 22, 1797 when Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first jump with a silk parachute and landed in the park Monceau.

This place seemed to me a mysteriously magical, very calm and peaceful, like a secret place in Paris. And even when there were a lot of visitors, it remained very cozy and comfortable for creativity. I believe that no many tourists know about the existence of this park…

Image

And now I would like to tell you a bit of Parisian storefronts’ life (or “window shopping”), for those who prefer material things rather than spiritual or just a beautiful showcase for the shopping-lovers. By the way, showcases here, in Paris, is like another world, great art, and generally very creative, interesting thing. Unfortunately, I was so fascinated by some of it that didn’t really expand my photo archive in this category, but presenting you the bit I have…

“Dumb and dumber” would be confused…which one to chose))

One of the miracles, which I discovered in Paris, was the modern business district of La Défense. It is also called “Parisian Manhattan.” It is the largest business center in Europe. Internet says (yes, it does talk to me periodically)) that there are about about 20 000 people living there and around 150 000 coming there every day for a working purpose.

Personally, I was amazed by many different things of the area … even the way to the place was great. It took me an hour and a half to get there and already on the way there were views or architectures that attracted my attention. For example, Théâtre des Sablons. I liked this installation with the teapots, which reminded me of Alice in Wonderland. I also imagined that I was in a fairy tale …and I really was on the way to this Parisian modern fairy tale!

Image

A church (if I am not mistaken, it was the church of St. Pierre)

Image

La Défense is so close! That’s it…(although after this photo was taken, I managed to walk for another 30 minutes before coming to the skyscrapers itself. You can officially call me – “a dreaming snail that captures everything on its way”)))

Image

While crossing the bridge, I decided to look down to the river Seine, and saw the athletes! One even posed for me. He was such a “Caesar” – was working with his team, and for my camera – both at the same time.

Image

And here I am, in the area, the happiness has already begun to spread throughout the body, affecting hidden corners of my soul.

How wonderful it was that I came just in time for the sunset, I went up to the arch (modern prototype of the Arc de Triomphe, which, by the way could have been seen far ahead)

Image

I sat down on the very top step and just watched the sun! There were different images, stories and dreams running in my head at this magical moment… hard to explain how much I was penetrated by the strings (or jets or beams) of HAPPINESS! It’s so hard to explain that I cannot even chose the right word, ahah, but the fact that I was just sitting on the steps of the building, in a simple tracksuit, it was cold with the strong wind, but I was over the moon about everything: the sun that was about  to sleep, the magnificent sky, nature and the fact that I can just sit down and feel TIME – here and now, nowhere to run, no hurry … that time I was also thinking that no matter how beautiful Paris was, its architecture, paintings of great artists and so on, nature – this is real great beauty!

Image

I think I will finish my post with such positive lovely notes…I would be glad to share and express more but maybe next time…I wish you to appreciate, enjoy and love the nature! It’s such an incredible thing, pure beauty which we should take care of! My blog is about happiness and I do believe that nature is a big part of our happiness!

Wish you all the very best, dears! Lots of love and see you soon!
